After what felt like hours, we found ourselves in an abandoned building.

We collapsed against the rotting walls, panting heavily.

Brushing a stray lock of hair from my face, I met Mayn’s eyes.

They held a mixture of relief, gratitude, and something else I couldn’t quite pinpoint.

“You… you were incredible back there,” he breathed, his voice laced with admiration. “I didn’t expect you to fight.”

I smirked, despite the situation. “Neither did I.”

Mayn chuckled. “Neither did they.”

“I guess we both have a few surprises up our sleeves.”

He chuckled softly, then his expression turned serious. “We’re in this together, Emilia. I promise, we’ll find a way out of it.”

I was so grateful he was there, that I didn’t have to face this alone.

Mayn

Dawn was approaching, painting the sky with soft hues of orange and pink.

The city below was waking up, still oblivious to the chaos lurking in its shadows.

We found ourselves on a rooftop, taking a much-needed respite.

The night had been eventful, filled with narrow escapes and undeniable connection.

Sitting beside Emilia, legs dangling over the edge, I felt an overwhelming mixture of worry, hope, and an emotion I had long suppressed — attachment.

It was dangerous for warriors like me to form bonds, especially in the midst of battle, but with Emilia… it felt different.

“I have to admit,” Emilia began, breaking the silence, “when I first saw you, I thought you were part of the problem. Your alien form, the way you pursued me… it was hard not to jump to conclusions.”

“I understand,” I replied softly, turning to face her. “In your situation, I might have felt the same. It’s not every day that you’re thrusted into an interstellar conflict.”

She chuckled. “That’s an understatement. It’s all so surreal — being targeted by aliens, fleeing for my life, and now sitting here with you. Just a day ago, my biggest worry was sorting out shipments for the bookstore.”

I smiled, appreciating the vulnerability she was sharing. “Life has a funny way of changing our plans.”

Sighing, she met my gaze. “Why are you doing this, Mayn? Why go to such lengths to help me?”

The question caught me off guard.

The weight of my history with the Vendikar pressed upon my shoulders, a burden I had carried for too long. “It’s not just about you, Emilia,” I began, choosing my words carefully. “It’s about stopping the Vendikar from continuing their malevolent plans. They’ve destroyed countless lives, turned entire planets into their puppets. I’ve witnessed their horrors firsthand, losing those I cared about.”

Emilia’s eyes widened. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “So what happens to me? What if we don’t reach the cure in time?”

I didn’t like revealing the true horror of her situation but I sensed she was stronger than most. “You’ll gradually turn into a female Vendikar. You will lose all control of yourself. You will mate with the first male human you come across and you will lay a litter of baby Vendikar females. Within days, you will be ready to mate again. And again. And again. Meanwhile, your progeny will do the same. The Vendikar will spread across the surface of the Earth and take it over from within. They will have taken over your planet without needing to fire a single shot.”

Emilia just sat there, stunned into silence. “But there is a cure, right?”

“Yes,” I said. “It is on my home planet, Zephyra. We must get there as fast as we can, before you turn completely.”

After being quiet for a moment, Emilia asked, “What you did earlier, with the burst of light…”

I nodded. “Our abilities are the only way to fight the Vendikar’s darkness.” My thoughts wandered to my home planet, the memories of family and friends I had lost to the Vendikars’ treachery. “It’s a pain I carry with me, a constant reminder of why I must stop them. And when I learned about their plans for Earth, for you, I couldn’t stand by and watch history repeat itself.”
