He reached out to take me by the arm but I pulled back and raised the can of mace to his face.

He didn’t even blink.

Didn’t he know it could blind him?

This… This can’t be real…

Can it?

“W-Why me?”

“You’re not the first to be targeted, but I’ve reason to believe you’re special to their plans.” He paused, considering his words. “Let me help you, Emilia.”

Emilia.

He knows my name… How can he know my name?

I shook my head in an effort to shake my head from the mist of panic that had settled over me.

There are tons of ways he could know my name!

A myriad of emotions clashed within me — fear, curiosity… and even a sliver of hope.

Drawing a shaky breath, I lowered the mace, albeit hesitantly. “If you truly want to help… then tell me everything.”

Mayn nodded and offered his hand.

I looked at it uncertainly.

If I took it, if I accepted it, I would be letting myself into whatever craziness I’d stumbled into.

I led her down the alleyways, making one random turn after another.

“The Vendikar,” I began, pointing at the still-bleeding prick on her finger, “they’ve poisoned you, intending to transform you into one of them. I’ve been tracking their operations across galaxies. You’re not their first victim, but I aim to make you their last.”

A tremble passed through her.

The gravity of my words made her pale, but a spark of resilience still flickered in her eyes. “W-Why me?” she whispered.

“They target the curious, the brave — those whose souls resonate with the adventures penned in the very books you surround yourself with.”

Outside, the familiar and foreboding echo of footsteps approached, their rhythmic cadence growing louder.

I could feel the Vendikar closing in, their malevolent intentions palpable.

My every muscle tensed in anticipation.

Emilia glanced towards the alley’s entrance that spilled out onto a main thoroughfare, her hesitation evident. “How do I know you’re not one of them? That this isn’t some trap?”

I came to a stop and faced her.
