“Because we surprised him. And you told him he was a good magician, and you got him to stop being petrified and talk to you about oak trees.”

“No.”

“You didn’t do that?”

“I don’t…I’m not…” Em ran a hand through her hair, made it stick up more. “Aric…”

“I’m not saying you should. I’m not saying you need to, I don’t know, start a mystical school and start teaching baby magicians.” He held out a hand, under sunset light. “I know you want this life. Our life. I’m just saying you have options. And you’d be good at them.”

Em took his hand. And then stepped in closer, so that Aric’s arm went around her. “And you would, what, also retire, and open a training ground for new heroes?”

“Why not?” He kissed the top of her head. “I mean, not yet, obviously. You want to save the world a few hundred more times first.”

“So do you. Protecting everyone. Aric…” Em’s eyes were the silver of stars, of promises, of light in the evening, under the dreamy wash of oncoming blue. “Thank you. I love you, you know.”

“Yep.”

“Speaking of saving the world, at some point we’ll have to deal with my father. He’ll be frustrated that he didn’t scoop us up.”

“Will he be able to track us?”

“He might. I’m not ready for that. Not yet.”

“So we’ll get ready,” Aric said, keeping the arm around her, “together.”

“I’m so glad I’ve got you,” Em said, “and you’ve got me, and we should definitely ask about a fancy bedroom for the night. For now, tonight, dance with me once at a wedding-party, and then we can sit down for a bit and you can fuss over me, and maybe we can find out whether there’s gingerbread? I definitely like gingerbread.”

“I’ll find you some,” Aric said, joy like the warmth of those spices in his chest, in the shape and feel of Em beside him, with him. “And yes, always, I’m always happy to dance with you.”
