There’s just a big form, obviously a man, walking toward me. My palms grow damp and I take a step back.

What are you supposed to do in this type of situation? Do I run?

I look down at the thin canvas shoes that I have on. They’re not exactly great running shoes, but that’s the least of my concerns. I haven’t run or worked out since I was in high school. I’ll probably get winded after ten feet.

The footsteps grow closer and I start to really panic. I can’t die like this!

“I know karate!” I scream and then I realize how dumb that was.

I basically just challenged my murderer to a fight.

“I’m a black belt!” I yell.

Okay, I guess I’m really doubling down on this karate thing…

“I mean it!” I scream when they get even closer.

“I’m sure that you do,” comes a deep voice and even though it’s totally inappropriate, I can feel my nipples pebble in my bra at the sound of that sexy growl.

“I do,” I say, a little more weakly.

He doesn’t say anything back to that but I can just make out him digging in his pocket for something.

Oh my gosh! Does he have a knife? This guy is here to kill you, not deflower you! Get it together, body!

A light shines in my eyes and I cover my eyes from the glare.

“Sorry,” he murmurs and I peek out from between my fingers to see him shining it toward our feet.

It’s just enough light that I can make out some of his features. The guy has to be close to six and a half feet tall. His eyes look dark blue, but it’s too dark out to make out their exact hue. He’s wide, built like a tank, and my body starts to react to the sight of such a strong, alpha man.

His dark brown hair is cut short and that’s what gives his identity away. I recognize him instantly and start to relax.

“You’re not a murderer. You’re that war hero,” I say with a little laugh.

I can’t believe that I really thought that I was going to get killed out here on this deserted road. I need to stop watching so many scary movies when I babysit. It never ends well.

“Right,” he says flatly, and even though I can’t see his face, I know that he’s not thrilled about something.

“I’m Mabel,” I say, sticking out my hand and he hesitates for a second before he takes it.

“Jonah.”

“Nice to meet you.”

“What are you doing out here?”

“Car trouble,” I say, pointing behind me and I see that the smoke has finally stopped coming out from under the hood.

“Let’s take a look.”

I let him handle it. I don’t know anything about cars, but if he can fix it, then that saves me some money. Plus, I get to watch him while he works. Maybe he’ll get hot or dirty and he’ll need to take his shirt off.

Wow, my hormones are really out of control tonight…

He pops the hood and I stand to the side of the car, watching as he checks a few things.

“Your engine overheated,” he tells me and I nod like I know what he’s talking about.
