“Whoa!” I say with a gasp and he pulls me farther back.

“Careful,” he says and I look around.

I don’t know how he can see. It’s practically pitch black out here.

“Is there a raccoon?” I whisper and he chuckles.

“No, but you were about to walk off the edge of that cliff.”

He grabs his phone and shines the light in front of us, and I gasp again when I realize that he’s right.

“Oh, right. That.”

“I seem to spend a lot of time wandering around in the dark ever since I met you,” he says and I can hear the smile in his voice.

“It’s all part of the experience,” I quip and he laughs.

The sound rolls over my skin, leaving goose bumps in its wake. I don’t know what it is about Jonah, but I like him. I barely know him, but I trust him. I know that he could be important to me.

“So, I don’t really have a special place. I also have no idea where I’m going,” I admit as I turn to face him.

“I figured that out about ten minutes in,” he says back and I swat his arm.

“And you just let me walk into this raccoon-infested forest anyway.”

“I wanted to see what you would do,” he says and I see one of his big shoulders lift in a shrug.

“I guess we should head back to the car,” I say and he reaches out, taking my hand in his.

I let him lead us back. I have no idea how he knows where to go because I’m all turned around but fifteen minutes later we reach his car.

He helps me into the passenger seat and hands me the bags of food before he rounds the car and climbs behind the wheel.

“Why did you suggest a picnic?” he asks as he starts to unpack the food.

“I didn’t know where else to go. You just seemed so tense and uncomfortable at Margherite’s. I wanted you to have fun with me,” I say and I look over at him.

He’s staring at me and I would give anything to be able to tell what he was thinking right now.

Then he’s moving, his big hand cupping my cheek and pulling me closer to him. The food falls out of the bag and down onto the floorboard, but neither of us says anything. Not when his lips are just a breath away from mine.

“Thank you,” he whispers, and then his mouth is on mine.

His lips are so firm, yet soft as they mold to mine. I part under him and he angles my head more to the right, giving him more access to my mouth. I moan and his hand slips around to the back of my neck. Then he’s pulling me into him more.

I wish that this center console wasn’t separating us. I wish that we weren’t in his car so that I could feel his body against mine.

Car headlights flash over us and we both break apart reluctantly. Jonah’s hand is still wrapped around the back of my neck and I lick my swollen lips, wanting to taste him.

“Fuck,” he groans, his eyes dropping to my mouth.

“Okay,” I whisper back and his eyes heat.

“Let me take you out tomorrow night. We can try a real restaurant again. Or I can find a campground if you want your picnic.”

My heart melts at his words. I love that he just wants to give me whatever I want.

“Let me cook for you. We can have a picnic in my bed.”
