“Well, I’m twenty-two and I work at the Bees Knees Flower Shop over on fifth avenue. I’ve been working there since I was eighteen. Clara, the owner, was a friend of my grandma and she hired me right out of high school. It doesn’t pay much, but I love the work.”

“I can see you happy there, surrounded by all of the flowers,” he says with a small smile.

“Um, I’m an orphan. My mom died when I was seven and my grandma raised me after that, but she passed away a few years ago so now it’s just me.”

As soon as I say the words, I wish that I could take them back. The energy in the room changes from playful to somber so quickly and I shift in his lap, wondering if I should excuse myself.

“I’m sorry to hear that, baby girl. What about your dad?”

“I never met him. He left my mom as soon as he found out that she was pregnant with me.”

“Idiot bastard,” Davis hisses and I nod.

“My mom was great though,” I say, changing the subject. “What about you?”

“Well, I’m an only child. My father passed away about five years ago so it’s just me and my mom, but she’s the best. I’ll take you to meet her soon. We have dinner together every Sunday,” he tells me and I smile.

“That sounds lovely.”

He smiles down at me gently, offering me another bite of steak.

“What’s your favorite color?” He asks, steering us back to safer conversation.

“Rainbow. It’s way too hard to pick one, so I choose all of them,” I say with a laugh. “Or anything with glitter.”

He chuckles at that, but it’s not in a mocking way. It’s more like he thinks that I’m adorable and he can’t believe that I’m here with him.

I wiggle in his lap again, my blood heating when I feel that thick ridge in his pants beneath me.

The mood in the room changes once more and the room fills with sexual tension as I stare at him over my shoulder. I’m holding my breath as his eyes roam over my face. His pupils dilate and his green eyes darken to a dark pine green.

He wants me. This rich, handsome, powerful man wants me.

“Love taking care of you. Love you squirming all over my lap. Are your panties wet, baby girl?” He whispers in my ear and I nod, a sob getting caught in my throat.

“Yes,” I admit, my voice coming out breathy and filled with need and he smirks, his fingers stroke lower on my hip.

“You don’t need to worry about a thing now, Izzy. You have me as your man. I’m going to take care of everything. You’re mine now, baby girl. I’ll handle everything.”

What he’s offering sounds so good, maybe even too good to be true, but I can’t focus on that right now. Not when his finger is brushing back and forth against my skin.

He feeds me another bite and my tongue licks against his finger. Davis groans and the sound sends fireworks off in my stomach. I want to hear him make more of that sound.

I swallow and I expect him to feed me another bite. Instead, he lifts me, turning me in his lap so that we’re facing each other and I’m straddling him, my knees sinking into the plush fabric of the chair.

I wrap my arms around his neck, needing to hold onto him and he rocks my hips against him.

“Oh,” I moan and a muscle in his jaw pops.

“So. Damn. Sexy,” he says, punctuating each word with a roll of his hips.

“More,” I plead and he leans forward, his lips capturing mine.

I don’t even know what I’m asking for, but Davis does. He takes over and I let him willingly. It feels so good to be in his arms. For the first time in forever, I feel at peace. I’m not stressed about bills or lonely. I’m safe and happy.

“Daddy,” I whisper when he lets me up for air.

I freeze in his arms. I’m not even sure where that word came from. It just popped out and now I’m not sure how to react.
