Page 12 of Snaring Emberly

Turning on my heel, I grab the nearest male body and lunge at his lips. The man stiffens at first but gives in to the kiss. His lips are inviting and soft, tasting of cigars and expensive whiskey.

He wraps his arms around my waist, pulls me tight against his muscular chest, and deepens the kiss. My eyes flutter shut, my core floods with heat, and my clit throbs in sync with the rapid beat of my heart.

I melt into his much larger body, already forgetting that my ex is about to arrest me for a crime I only half committed.

It’s only when the man’s huge erection presses into my belly that I come to my senses and pull away. I turn to Jim, the pulse between my thighs still hammering, and check that he’s convinced I have a new boyfriend.

Jim backs away, his mouth falling slack, his skin paling to the shade of diluted milk. “I-I’m sorry,” he yells over the music. “I didn’t know.”

My brows pull together. What’s gotten that bastard so spooked? Jim loves to dominate other men because he thinks he’s all-powerful and above the law. I whirl around to look the man in the face and meet a set of piercing brown eyes belonging to the biggest Montesano brother.

Not just any Montesano brother, Roman, the mafia boss who just got released from death row. Up close, he’s even more chiseled with sharp cheekbones and an aura of danger that sets my nerves alight. And he stares down at me like I’m his last meal.

Fuck!

I don’t want to spend the night in jail terrorized by Jim, but I sure as hell don’t want the attention of a mafia boss who should be in prison, either. With a nervous cough, I step away, but Roman’s arm whips out, and he grabs me by the waist.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he says in a deep voice that sends shivers zipping up and down my spine.

“Home?” I rasp.

His eyes darken. “You’re going to stay here and finish what you started.”

FIVE

ROMAN

If my lips are tingling, then it’s because no one has kissed me since before my arrest. If my heart is pounding hard enough to break through its cage, then it’s because I’m moments away from restoring the family’s stolen assets.

My current state of excitement is in no way connected to the woman squirming in my grasp, but I have to admit my first encounter with Emberly Kay has been a surprise.

The man who was harassing her has the look of an incompetent cop. I eyeball the red-haired bastard until he turns around and vanishes into the crowd on the dance floor. He’s the type of power-mad asshole who would call for reinforcements because the girl who rejected him had the audacity to kiss a felon.

I escort Emberly through the VIP area and gesture to two of my men to guard the back door. They nod back and move in position toward the exit.

She tries to drag her feet, but I keep her moving until there’s nowhere for her to escape.

“Hey.” She places a palm on my chest, her eyes widening with alarm. “Where are we going? Let me go.”

“You owe me an explanation.”

I walk her through the door that leads to a private hallway. As soon as it swings shut, the music dims enough for me to hear her rapid breaths.

I release my hold around her waist and glare down into her wide eyes. “What the hell was that back there?”

“Sorry.” She takes a step backward, trying to create a little distance. “My ex was trying to throw me in jail.”

“Since when was rejecting a man a criminal offense?” I smile to lighten the mood. “You’ll have to give me a better explanation than that, sweetheart.”

She dips her head and rubs the back of her neck. “He says there’s a warrant out for my arrest and he offered to make it go away.”

“Let me guess, with a roll in his back seat?”

A shudder shakes her slender frame. “Most likely in a cell.”

“That’s why you assaulted my lips?”

Her head snaps up, and her eyes flare. “Don’t act like you’re defenseless. You kissed me back!”
