EMBERLY

I rise off the seat and stumble toward the door. Roman catches me by the waist with his strong arm and pulls me into his chest.

“Are you okay, baby?” he asks, his deep voice laced with concern.

“I-I don’t know.”

Maybe it’s the excitement, maybe it’s the wine or maybe it’s all that uneven sleep, but I feel so giddy. Tonight, I’ve experienced more emotions than I have in an entire week.

I’ve never opened up to anyone about the reason I don’t like to feel confined, but Roman made me feel safe enough to confide to him about Mom.

He doesn’t just know the right things to say, but backs them up with actions, even if it means filling a man with bullets. Roman is the protector I never thought I needed.

As we reach the door, Roman scoops me off my feet, making my stomach lurch. I shriek, but he only chuckles, carrying me bridal style through the exit and all the way towards the elevator.

“Put me down.” I wrap an arm around his neck and bury my face in his shoulder.

“What’s wrong?” he murmurs. “You suddenly feeling shy? I want the whole fucking world to know that you’re mine.”

My heart flutters, and heat spreads across my chest and travels between my legs. Once again, he’s claimed me as his. I peek up at him through my lashes and meet his searing gaze.

“I’m not shy,” I say with a giggle.

Roman raises a brow. “Then what are you?”

My breath shallows, and I look straight into his eyes. Roman’s full lips curl into a dazzling smile as though he’s just won an argument or made some kind of point. When he looks at me like that, I’m weak. Completely under his spell.

I inhale a deep breath, eager to match his intensity. “I’m yours.”

Roman captures my mouth in a kiss so searing that I almost forget we’re walking through a hallway made of glass. Even the hotel manager following us fades into the background as Roman’s tongue twists around mine and he threads his fingers through my hair.

“I love you, you know that?” he says.

“Mmmmm.”

“And I will never let you go.”

We reach the end of the hallway. When the elevator dings, Roman carries me inside. I cling onto his broad shoulders, letting him devour me with his kisses.

The doors slide open, and the man accompanying us guides Roman down a set of hallways, through another door, and up another elevator. Roman continues kissing me until I’m only vaguely aware that we’re no longer in the casino.

“Where are you taking me?” I whisper against his lips.

“Welcome to the Hotel Marisol,” Roman replies with a smirk. “We’re about to step into its best suite.”

The hotel manager slides the keycard into a lock, letting the door click open. Roman carries me inside and finally sets me on my feet.

The first thing I see are floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bright lights of Beaumont City. My breath catches, and I reel back on my feet.

“This is?—”

“Beautiful?” Roman asks.

I whirl around in his arms and gaze up into his hungry, dark eyes and all the words die in my throat.

Roman lowers his head, his lips hovering so close to mine that I smell the wine on his breath. “There’s nothing in this world I want more than you,” he says, his voice low. “I would lie for you, steal for you, kill for you. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you at my side.”

The pulse between my legs quickens at his words, and heat rushes into my core. How can the most perfect man I’ve ever met be so terrifying and thrilling?
