“My advice as a lawyer, a friend, and a potential co-defendant is to use that Montesano charm. It worked for you the first time.”

The call waiting beeps, and Gil’s name flashes on the screen.

“Got to go.” I hang up and answer the second call. “Gil.”

“There’s trouble at the new meth lab,” he rumbles.

“On my way.”

I hit the accelerator and demand details. Gil says Tommy Galliano sent a pair of armed men to take it over, not knowing that four of the people working under our lead chemist are my foot soldiers.

Six months after freeing Isabella Cortese, half her team quit the meth business for good, and I wanted replacements who could fight back.

I put my troubles with Emberly on the back burner and focus on the threat of Tommy Galliano. That greasy bastard has been quiet since we dealt with the Moirai Group. Someone murdered his younger brother and set fire to one of his homes. Looks like he’s over the grief, because now he’s back encroaching on my turf.

Business is stronger than ever, and our ranks have swelled in the past six months. It’s time to deal with Galliano before he finishes the job Capello started.

Less than twenty minutes later, I reach the underground lab, and the fight is already over. Isabella and her team are shaken, but they’ve managed to protect the equipment and subdue the intruders.

The older woman gives me a crooked smile. “Looks like we took care of ourselves.”

“Good work.” I wrap an arm around her shoulder and pull her into a hug. “I’ll assign more men to patrol the area.”

She pulls back and points at a door at the other end of the chamber. “Gil’s already in the restroom with them.”

I stride past a line of vats and into the restroom to find Gil standing over a pair of round-faced men bound with zip ties and industrial-grade plastic wrap.

My brows rise. “What the fuck is this?”

“It’s all the scientists had at hand to restrain Galliano’s goons,” Gil says with a shrug.

I kneel in front of them. “Here’s the situation. Your boss sent you on a suicide mission.”

One of them opens his mouth to speak, but I raise a finger. “He had to know I wouldn’t leave the second lab unguarded, yet he sent you here anyway, proving he doesn’t value your lives.”

Neither of them can meet my eyes.

“What?” I ask.

“He told us to choose between attacking your lab or the lives of our mom and sister.”

A chill ripples across my skin, and my insides tighten with dread. There must be something I’m missing. I glance at Gil, who shakes his head, looking just as surprised as I am about this ultimatum.

I focus my attention on the bound men, seeing some family resemblance. Even though one is balding and the other has a full set of hair, they share the same jowly cheeks and snub noses.

“Now, why would Galliano want us to perform your execution?”

The thinner of the pair speaks first.

“We fucked up on a job?—”

“No,” I snarl, my gaze boring into his. “Why did he send you to this lab?”

He bows his head. “Tommy said we weren’t to speak about it until you arrived.”

“I’m here now,” I say through gritted teeth. “Start talking.”

“He says to call your team in Carmel, NJ.”
