Page 67 of Snaring Emberly

The tension in my gut relaxes. I’ve found a sore spot I can manipulate over and over to distract her from the truth. Emberly Kay is so terrified of falling into the clutches of her former boyfriend that she’d rather accept the hospitality of an ex-con.

I nod, as though adding weight to my claim. “Every organization has a mole, but I never knew it would be Dominic.”

“Do you think he could be a detective?”

I run the pad of my thumb over her cheekbone. “Or working for the cops. Whichever is true, he won’t get away with hurting you.”

Emberly deflates, her lashes lowering. “Why are there so many people out to get us?”

When I pull her into my chest, she finally relaxes into my embrace. “I made a mockery of the justice system by proving them all to be a bunch of corrupt idiots. That’s why they’ll stop at nothing to get me back behind bars.”

“And me?”

I press a kiss on the top of her head. “Some cops are psychopaths. Jim Callahan thinks if he can’t have you, then nobody will.”

She makes a strangled noise and trembles. “Oh, god.”

Anyone watching this would call me a heartless bastard, but I never wanted her to suffer… Much. Maybe a little at first, but I want her death to be painless.

I hug her tighter. “Don’t worry. We’ll stay one step ahead of that bastard. He won’t get away with hurting you. Not while I still draw breath.”

Emberly’s quiet sobs pull at my chest, igniting an inferno of rage toward those dirty dealing assholes. How typical of a Capello to send out a hit on his own sister.

Scooping Emberly into my arms, I carry her across her studio and into the bedroom, where she left my clothes and phone.

Laying her on the mattress, I murmur, “You need to be checked out by a doctor.”

“Stay with me.” She grabs my arm.

“I swear it,” I say, and mean every word. “Let me take off your apron.”

She lets me undress her down to her underwear and tuck her under the covers. I press another kiss to her forehead before wiping the blood off my hands. Then I grab my phone and curl up at her side.

“Thank you,” she murmurs.

I slide my fingers through her curls. “For what?”

“For always saving me.”

My throat tightens. Sex with Emberly is clouding my senses. It’s understandable, since hers is the only pussy I’ve had in five years. Now she’s stirring up unwanted thoughts. Thoughts like how I’m a dick for comforting her from her brush with death when I plan on being her executioner.

“I’m no hero. I’m a beast.”

She exhales a broken laugh. “Yeah. I saw that from the way you smashed Dominic’s head like a pumpkin, but you’re my beast.”

“You’re not scared of me?” I ask.

“Because you beat up the man trying to strangle me to death?” she asks, her voice trembling. “Fuck no.”

She’s lying. That or the man she’s running from is far worse than what she witnessed. Either way, she’s brave. Anyone else would be halfway to the gates.

I hug her close, my heart warming. “That’s my girl.”

For the next several minutes, I rock Emberly from side to side, all the while exchanging rapid texts with Cesare and Benito. Right now, they’re the only two fuckers I can completely trust.

What I said about there being a mole in my organization was no lie. Dominic was working with Samson Capello, and I need details, starting with where that sister-slaughtering bastard is hiding so I can pump him full of bullets.

Emberly’s body relaxes against mine and her breathing evens. I check my phone, seeing a message from Cesare letting me know he’s already dragged Dominic out of the studio with a promise to keep him alive.
