This is true love’s first mated kiss, is it not? So why, I wondered with misty eyes, unable to focus on my lover’s face, does it taste of blood?

My heart dropped to my stomach, and then the stone-cold floor as Gotham’s voice was now filling the room. I screamed in absolute terror, grabbing his rusted scissors off my table as a branch burst through Ziran's stomach. He doubled over, piercing the wood with my enchanted scissors that were overflowing with prism root poison and the Goddess' blessings.

It was barely noon, far too early for Gotham to be coming to harvest my hair. And yet, there was no way I could deny the obvious. He was here, my mate's blood splattering my body. And whatever he was, Gotham was hurting Ziran!

“Hide,” Ziran forced out as he spun and slashed at a twisted spider-like creature made of wood scaling the tower, whose face resembled Gotham in his youth, swiveling around, screaming bloody murder.

I whimpered, the remnants of our lovemaking clinging to my skin as I threw myself from the bed and away.

“It smells like your spells and pheromones. More potent than ever, Reimund. It is sickly sweet in your little love nest today. Are you lonely? If that's why you let that bastard touch you!?” Gotham roared, his voice disjointed from his horrible body. "This pathetic bastard with his weak seals. And you call yourself the future king. I feel his men after me. Did you send them? No matter, Reimund is coming with me. You can die here as I build a new castle for my little prince."

I covered my ears, gagging as Gotham pierced Ziran again, who held firm, refusing to allow him to get to me as I found the only hiding place I could.

"If I die, you will be free, Reimund. That's the truth. The only way to destroy the curse. Your pathetic alpha couldn't figure that out. That's the only way. But I'll never die. I'll live forever; feed the forest elders your magic in exchange for your soul," Gotham finally admitted as I crawled inside of my chest after dumping out all the luneria and trinkets that I could to fit inside. "Ugh! But the elders, my masters are angry. You will pay for disturbing my land, Ziran!"

"This land is mine, you ugly bastard!" Ziran roared as they clashed. "And you will never touch a hair on Reimund head again!"

I balled up, clutching Gotham's rusted scissors like a knife. This chest used to be a form of punishment, but now I felt a sick sense of solace trapped within.

"Ugh!" Ziran, my mate, my alpha, gagged, stabbing Gotham in the eye as his face pushed through the window, along with most of his contorted, wooden body.

His limbs were covered in fine hairs, so sharp they slashed at Ziran's skin. My hair, I realized, as only my scissors he slashed the air with cut them.

"What the hell are you!" I screamed as Gothem's monstrous form contorted above the chest, neck extending until his face was hovering above me. I fought to close the door as he used a wooden spike to keep it open.

"Your worst nightmare," Gotham grunted, only to seize and scream as Ziran leaped on his back.

They clashed, their power unequal, as Ziran put his body on the line to protect me. I sobbed, trying to stand as a flaming arrow flew through the window and hit my bookshelf.

Everything was up in flames. Everything in my life was unraveling and falling apart. Worse of all, I could do nothing but pray for the goddess to strengthen my scissors as Ziran defended me the best he could.

"Live!" Ziran shouted as he turned to slam my chest shut. "I command you to live, omega. And with my dying breath, I will end Gotham."

A great rumbling filled the air and the next thing I knew, I was freefalling in the air.

CHAPTER TEN

ZIRAN

“Silence!” Gotham roared, unleashing the forces of nature just as the cavalry arrived.

I hacked and slashed as the roots and thorns erupted from his paper mache body, but then they slashed through me, first my chest and then my eyes.

“Ahhh!” I howled in agony as the world went dark.

Slashing, in the darkness, following the trail of the villain’s magic. The outline of his body was faint and jagged, a horrific amalgamation of various beings stitched together by magic and pure hatred, it seemed. And he was near the window.

I would not be forgiven for failing my omega, even with my dying breath. I threw him into the chest for his protection but knew there wasn’t much time. The tower would collapse if I did not slay Gotham now.

We Elohime were immortal in name only, after all. And, as blood gushed from my open wounds, I was robbed of my vision, and facing a monstrous evil all alone; I knew no magic could save me from near-certain death. But that meant he wouldn't be saved with, his low gods abandoning him as Gotham screamed and fell apart, like the flame-ravaged forests surrounding that accursed tower.

If there was some truth in love conquering all, I would hold this demon at bay long enough to allow the love of my life to escape. I knew I had no choice but to be brave for all of us, including my unborn children who I sensed fluttering in Rei's womb. How sweet that I could feel their magic before my untimely end.

“Yaah!” I screamed, summoning the last of my magic as I pierced through the darkness.

I spun around, my back to Gotham’s monstrous form, and impaled him with my mate’s blessed scissors. Together, we fell from the tower he had climbed every night as midnight struck, finally freeing Rei from hell.
