Only my mother. Perhaps she had known.

“The grail showed me. You’re the king-killer. Not just kings. You’re the destroyer of worlds.”

I stared at him. “But I don’t want to be any of those things.”

“I know.” Kaye’s voice was gentle. “I know you don’t. You just want to be you.”

I nodded.

“But the problem is, Medra... he won’t let you. He’ll use you like he used your mother.”

“I won’t let him,” I whispered.

“Then you’ll have to stop him,” Kaye said.

“How?”

A look of sadness passed over his face. “I can’t tell you that.”

I felt my cheeks redden with anger. “Can’t? Or won’t? Aren’t we family? Doesn’t family stick together? Tell me, Kaye.”

He shook his head. “It’s not like that. You have to see for yourself.”

“Where? Where do I go to see?”

“Where they all are now. You glimpsed the place. I know you did.”

“The man on the throne,” I said automatically. “He looked at me.”

Kaye looked startled. “He saw you? Here?”

I felt a twinge of fear. “Yes.”

“Then, Medra, there’s not much time. You must either go to him or he’ll take you there himself. If he does, you won’t like it.”

Panic welled inside me. “What does that mean? How do you know all of this?” Stubbornly, I stomped my foot. “Who are you, anyway? Look at you! You’re just a boy in a bed. You’re no older than I am.”

“I’m older, and I’ve seen more,” Kaye said with a wistful smile. “I was tied to the grail. Believe me, I saw far more than I would ever have wished to.”

“What is this? What’s going on here?”

I turned towards the doorway.

Crescent stood there. He was alone. “Medra, what have you done?”

“Done?” I blinked at him in confusion. “I haven’t done anything.”

“Kaye.” He seemed to take in the boy in the bed for the first time, to realize my uncle was awake and sitting up. “Kaye, are you all right?”

“I didn’t hurt him, if that’s what you’re implying,” I said, feeling angry. “He was all alone when I found him. Forgotten.”

Just like me, the word implied.

But Crescent ignored me as he strode into the room. “We need to get you out of here.”

He was talking to Kaye.

“You could ask him, Medra,” Kaye said urgently. “Ask Crescent to take you there now.”
