Spencer took an audible breath, obviously attempting to stay composed.

He moved closer, and I stepped back, only to hit the edge of the kitchen worktop behind me as he loomed over me. He was wearing his usual suit and looking irresistible.

“You’re making this harder on yourself than it needs to be, Miss Watkins,” he murmured after a few moments of stillness. His ocean-blue gaze zoomed in on my lips. Spencer’s presence pushed all other thoughts away.

“L-Laura,” I stuttered. “You can call me Laura.”

“Why do you keep defying me, Laura? You should try to impress your boss if you want to keep your job,” he said.

The smell of his cologne clogged my senses, and why did he have to sound so sexy while discussing simple subjects like what I should call him? Suddenly, I was aroused again. This job wasn’t good for me. I had to get out of here and put some distance between me and this man who’d dangled his magnificent cock at me.

“I came home earlier because I needed to talk with you,” he continued. “As much as you infuriate me, I checked into your background, and you seem honest enough. You need employment, and I need someone trustworthy to take care of my daughter. She’s driven away many nannies in the past and has been misbehaving a lot lately. If you can turn this around, then you can stay as long as you like, but you must move in, because I often have to travel for diplomatic reasons and I know Maja doesn’t like it when I'm gone for too long, but it’s the nature of this job. Unfortunately our flat has only two bedrooms, but we will find you a room in another part of Number 10. However, if I'm away, then you could sleep in my room. It will be safer this way.”

I didn’t answer right away because I was still processing the way he’d said my name. I liked how it rolled over his tongue, and damn it, I shouldn’t.

“How often would you need to travel?” I asked.

He went to the fridge, and I took in a much-needed breath. This space was good.

“That depends. A lot of the time these kinds of trips are hard to predict, but I'll ask Cath to share my future plans with you, so you won’t be surprised. Maja takes riding lessons twice a week and tennis lessons on Thursdays. Sometimes I’m forced to work late, so I need you to stay until I get back. We have plenty of guest rooms. You could take any one you please,” he explained. He retrieved food and started putting things on the worktop. Didn’t he have a chef or something?

“All right, but could I go back to my flat in Camden on the weekends?” I asked, knowing Veronica didn’t like staying home alone, especially during the weekend.

He stared at me so intensely then, as if I’d told him I lived in a cave.

“You live in Camden? How are you going to get home now?” he questioned. He reached for a large pan from the cupboard.

Seeing him so domesticated turned me on even more.

Stop it! There is no you and him. This will never happen! my inner voice screamed at me.

“Tube.”

“It’s late, and some parts of Camden Market are unsafe. That’s why I want you to move in, so you don’t put yourself in any unnecessary danger,” he said, his voice tinged with annoyance.

Damn it, maybe there was more to Spencer Banks than just being a dickhead.

“I went home late almost every night when I used to work for the Forresters. I can take care of myself,” I said.

He paused while taking a steak out of its wrapper and setting it on the sizzling pan. His eyes moved to study me momentarily, and I shivered.

“I know you’re able to take care of yourself. When you work for me, though, I want to make sure you get home safely, so I’ll arrange a car for you,” he said, focusing on his steak. “And don’t even try to argue with me. This isn’t open for discussion.”

My stomach growled as he cooked his steak. I hadn’t eaten much today, I’d been too busy trying to make a good impression with Maja. Spencer must have heard it because he looked at me with a deep frown.

“There’s really no—”

“Sit your arse down, Laura,” he interrupted me.

His tone sent a wave of heat through my body. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I was having dinner with Spencer Banks, Prime Minister of the UK!

Chapter Seven

Spencer

Jeremy was not convinced by the situation and demanded that I dismiss Laura because of her roommate’s affiliation with Matthews. That created a potential security risk.

Despite his objections, I had already come to my own conclusion. Laura was trustworthy. There were no secrets hidden in her past, and I believed she could be good for Maja. To escape Jeremy’s questions, I made my way back to the residential part of Number 10.
