Her emerald eyes were piercing me—as if they could see past the brokenness of my dark soul. I didn’t want her to see the vulnerable part of me, so I glanced away.

“And when did these problems start? No, don’t answer that … about eighteen months ago, right, or maybe a little after?” She cocked her head to the side. “Maja said she’s missing you. Those were her exact words, Spencer, and she’s acting out because she wants your attention.”

I glared at her, irate that she was pointing these facts out as we both continued to eat our meal. We both finished in tense silence, while I thought about what she’d said about Maja. My mother had told me the same thing several weeks ago. Laura was very perceptive and intelligent, but she didn’t know me well enough to understand fully why Maja seemed so different now, though it brought a smirk to my face. I loved Maja very much, more than anything else in my life.

“Your phone will be fixed by tomorrow. Go and say goodbye to Maja. The car is waiting outside.”

She let out a loud sigh but didn’t argue again.

I made my way to the office part of the building, gave the phone to one of my agents, and texted Cath to get the car ready. When I came back, Laura was nowhere to be found and all the dishes were put away. I finished my glass of wine and dragged my hand through my hair. Since I was home early tonight, I realised Maja didn’t have any late evening classes, so I could spend some time with her. Our relationship had been difficult lately, and we barely talked anymore. I would have to try if anything was going to change.

Five minutes later, Maja and Laura appeared together.

“Hey, Dad,” Maja said upon seeing me leaning against the worktops.

Her smile caught me off guard. Usually, she would ignore me when I got home early.

“Ladies,” I replied gruffly.

Laura bent down and kissed Maja on the cheek, displaying her stunning cleavage.

“So, do I get any Daddy points for finding such a good and fun nanny?” I attempted to lighten up the atmosphere a bit.

Maja rolled her eyes. “No, but she can stay for now.”

She then winked at Laura, who responded with a sly smirk, only adding to my already uneasy feeling.

“I’ll take Laura out and be back soon to read you a bedtime story,” I muttered.

“Dad, stop babying me. We both know you never read me a bedtime story,” she said.

Laura chuckled.

“Just go to your room and I’ll be right there. If you’re good tonight, we can watch your favourite show together.” I tried to rectify the situation and prove myself a decent father.

“All right. Don’t take too long,” Maja said, then walked away.

I pressed my hand against Laura’s back in an encouraging gesture. An electric jolt shot through my palm, and she recoiled ever so slightly.

We walked in silence until eventually reaching the door. Laura stopped and bit on her bottom lip—so damn distracting.

“Thank you for this opportunity, Spencer,” she said. “I won’t let you down. Maja is such a sweet girl. She just needs to come out of her shell a bit.”

“I’m certain you won’t. Just don’t argue with me when it comes to safety, all right? I’ll meet you tomorrow at seven on the dot with your suitcase,” I said, and before she had a chance to respond, I softly placed my finger upon her lips, hushing her.

Fuck, why did I do that? A wave of heat coursed through my body as our eyes locked. Laura stared at me with dilated pupils and parted lips.

“Please, don’t argue with me. The car will wait outside your flat at six-thirty precisely. Goodbye, Laura.”

I hastily pulled away my hand, as if it had been scorched by a flame, and her breath hitched.

“Good night, Prime Minister,” she whispered.

Chapter Eight

Laura

Veronica wasn’t too keen when I told her that Spencer had asked me to move in, but she knew that my financial situation was terrible, and this way I could save some money because I didn’t have to commute as much. I told her that this was probably only temporary and I would be back home every weekend, so we could spend time together. I also needed to call my parents and let them know that I’d got a new job. My dad probably wasn’t going to believe me when I told him that I was looking after the Prime Minister’s daughter.
