“It’s not, Spencer. I asked Laura to have dinner with us the other day, and she said yes. Maja was very pleased, too. Laura is beautiful and so affectionate. I should introduce her to Rupert. Is she still single?”

A wave of envy cascaded through my abdomen, and I clenched the phone hard. Rupert, my youngest brother, was a ladies’ man. Laura deserved better than him, and if I couldn’t have her, then nobody else could!

“You aren't introducing my nanny to any of my brothers and that’s final,” I snapped into the phone, still remembering our kiss all too well. “But all right, I suppose we must come to dinner.”

Now, I had to persuade Laura to find an escape route. There was no way I’d drag her to a family gathering. She wouldn’t be comfortable in their company, especially with all my brothers in attendance.

“Why not? She's intelligent, single, and beautiful. Your brother needs to settle down, unless you want this girl for yourself, of course. I don’t even know why I haven’t thought about this before. She would make a great wife, but the press would ruin you unless you do it discreetly.”

Mum was an eternal romantic who still kept her feet firmly planted in reality. She never paid much attention to social status when it came to relationships. She had long tried to fix me up with women, regardless of how badly those dates typically ended. It didn’t matter if I chose a nanny or a cleaner as my partner—she just wanted me to be happy. She knew Samantha had really screwed me over, which explained why I was so guarded when it came to new relationships. I wasn’t ready to trust anyone else yet.

“I’m not getting involved with my nanny, Mum! That would destroy my career anyway, and she’s not like other women,” I added, convinced that Laura wouldn’t be easily impressed by me, since we’d had such a poor track record so far.

Mum chuckled. “Spencer, are you telling me your nanny isn’t falling for your good looks? That’s impossible, darling, unless she’s a lesbian?”

“Christ, Mum! She’s just picky, I guess.” I didn’t understand why we were even having this conversation. “See you Sunday,” I said and hung up.

I’d promised Laura I’d finish early so she could go home, but I didn't know what she was planning. I told myself that it was just a simple conversation and I had to get it over with. I raked my hand through my hair, unsure of how to even begin.

“Just be nice,” I muttered to myself before walking into the residential part of Number 10. I headed upstairs and changed into some jeans and a T-shirt. This would be our first official talk since I’d kissed her that night.

Coward. You’re a fucking coward, Spencer Banks. She is your nanny, and you’re the fucking Prime Minister.

My inner voice kept reminding me I wouldn’t change my ways because of this woman. As I walked into the kitchen, I was dumbstruck. Laura and my daughter were baking, laughing and giggling. My heart swelled at the adorable sight.

“What are you two up to?” I asked, my gaze fixed on Laura.

She looked stunning in her red dress with white flowers that showed off her slender figure. Her skin glowed, and there was something about her laugh that instantly put me at ease. All the stress and worries vanished when she was around.

“We’re making cupcakes,” Maja replied excitedly. “Do you wanna help us, Daddy?”

I shook my head. “I've to talk to Laura,” I replied.

My daughter’s face dropped.

“We are busy, and if you have anything to say, you can do that in front of Maja. We have no secrets, right, cupcake?” Laura asked, smiling at my daughter, ignoring me.

Fuck her attitude!

“Yeah, Daddy, Laura is the best, and these cupcakes will be delicious, with sprinkles and smiley faces. You can talk while you’re helping us,” Maja said while attempting to clean the mixture off her fingers.

I really didn’t want to do this in front of my daughter.

“Talk, Spencer.” Laura stirred the ingredients without so much as a glance at me.

I clenched my fists and reminded myself to stay in control.

“My mother just called me and invited us for dinner on Sunday. It’s a family thing, and she wanted me to bring you with us, but I said that you would be busy because it’s your weekend off,” I said.

Maja frowned. “I told Granny to invite her, and Laura said it would be fun,” my daughter interrupted.

Of course this was her idea.

“Darling, Laura only agreed to it to be polite. She probably has plans, and you know how Granny is sometimes,” I replied.

Laura finally lifted her head to look at me with narrowed eyes. That kiss kept playing on my mind like a fucking pianoforte, spiking my body temperature.

Laura raised the giant spoon to her mouth and slowly licked the base.
