I washed my hands and turned to face Spencer. His expression was twisted, and he seemed troubled.

“I’m going to the toilet, Daddy. Don’t touch anything. I've to be the first to taste the cupcakes,” Maja chirped, jumping off the stool and bolting from the kitchen.

I grabbed my bag, hoping to leave before the man decided to stop me.

“I know exactly what you’re doing, Laura, and so far, your plan to drive me fucking insane is working well,” he growled.

I flinched when he caged me between the kitchen cabinets with his muscular arms. My breath caught. So close … and then he leaned over, bringing his mouth only inches from mine.

“I've no idea what you’re talking about. Let me go. I’m going out with my roommate tonight,” I informed him, although my heart was hammering deep in my chest and the familiar wetness pooled between my legs.

His eyes darkened into a deeper shape of blue.

“You’re not leaving until we talk. We need to discuss Maja, ideally when she isn't listening,” he said firmly.

My confidence was slowly slipping away because I wanted him to devour my mouth again.

“No, my workday has ended, and I really have to leave, so please let go of me.” I summoned a sweet smile, just in time, because Maja returned to the kitchen, and he had no other choice but to step back.

“Your daddy agreed to keep an eye on the oven. I need to go, cupcake, but I'll see you on Sunday, right?” I said, giving her a kiss on the cheek.

She nodded.

“Laura, wait. We really need—”

“Daddy, look at the colour. I think this needs a higher …”

I quickly slipped out the front door. My palms were damp with sweat, and my pulse must have been going a million miles an hour, but at least I’d left him without causing drama.

He had been ignoring me for weeks and now he suddenly wanted to talk. There was no way I was going to dance to his tune.

I ran to the Tube and got the train that took me straight to Camden Market. Veronica had been planning this night out for as long as I remembered. Apparently, one of the girls from the Emperor Club had gained VIP tickets for the opening night at some fancy new club. I’d initially planned to skip it and instead go to the late hot yoga class, but my roommate had kept insisting, so I’d given in.

The relationship between Spencer and Maja was improving, but sometimes, he still acted cold and distant. I didn't know what his issues were, but that man needed a therapist because this wasn’t normal behaviour.

I got home an hour later, and we ate some Thai food I’d grabbed on the way.

“I'm so excited about this. Maybe I’ll meet the guy of my dreams tonight and I'll finally be able to forget about that one-night stand.” Veronica smoothed her stunning silver dress. She’d styled her red hair in waves and put perfect makeup on.

Her phone kept pinging, but she ignored it.

“Are you still thinking about that guy from your holiday in Greece?” I questioned.

She raised her left eyebrow.

“Of course. It was the best sex of my life. I should have bloody stayed with him, but no, I got scared and snuck out before he woke up. I didn’t even give him my real name. I told him my name was Valerie,” she complained. “Well, I had my flight and Clara with me … Anyway, enough about me. What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing, it was just Spencer again.” I pulled out my dress from the deepest recesses of my closet. It was red and slutty and everything I was not, but Veronica had bought it for me and insisted I wear it. Again, I gave in—a moment of weakness. I already knew this was a bad idea. I could hardly move in the club the last time I’d worn it because every guy there wanted to get my number.

Veronica snatched the dress from me before I could protest.

“You’re wearing this tonight because you’re hot and you’re going to fuck some hotshot to get that prick out of your system.” She gave me ‘the look’.

“I don’t need to get him out of my system. It was one kiss that meant nothing. You know I can’t just sleep with random guys. That just isn’t my thing!” I grabbed her phone. “Are you going to check your notifications? It says here that you have over one thousand of them. This pinging is driving me crazy.”

Veronica frowned and took her phone off me. She scrolled, and her eyes went wide.

“Oh my God, I think I might faint.” She sat on the sofa.
