“Let me send the driver for you,” I said. “Where are you?”

“No. Spencer, I'm not leaving and I want to dance!”

Christ, she was clearly drunk, but that didn’t seem like her. She’d told me she didn’t drink often.

“Tell me exactly where you are?” I ordered, because I was going to lose my patience soon.

“Uh … I’m in the club,” she responded.

“Laura,” I warned her. We weren’t going to get anywhere if she didn’t send me her location.

“Try to lighten up, Spencer, although I do like when you’re serious, because you make me feel all kinds of things,” she confessed breathlessly.

“I can’t help you if you don’t tell me where you are. I want your location. Now!”

“Are you going to come rescue me yourself, Prime Minister?”

“Laura. I’m losing my patience.” We were wasting time.

“I want to hear you moan in my ear while you—”

“Where the fuck are you?” I spat, and I was furious. Where the hell was her roommate? “Hello?”

The line went dead, and I swore under my breath again. Then the waitress came back, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect because James was glaring at me. He could probably sense my anger. I finished my whiskey and then tried to forget about Laura while Matthews talked about his latest trip to Thailand. An hour later, I felt a little tipsy, I’d drunk more than I should have because of Laura. I was worried about her safety. I kept rehearsing that phone call in my head, and I was fucking frustrated that I couldn’t do anything to find her.

“What’s wrong? Who was that earlier on the phone?” Rupert eyed me with curiosity.

“No one, don’t worry about it.” I knew full well there was no way I could track her down. She was out and she was clearly out of control.

My detail sat close by, always on the alert. They wouldn’t be drinking tonight. Besides, I couldn’t just leave, but after this phone call, I didn’t plan to stay long.

I removed the sunglasses as I could barely see anything in them and they made me feel like those guys from Men in Black.

“Rupert dragged me here tonight. Totally unplanned, of course, and maybe not the best idea.” I stared at my brother, James.

He was the complete opposite of all of us, quiet, down to earth, and discreet. All four of us had always been close, but lately, James had been distancing himself from the rest of the family. Something was going on with him.

He had the same dark hair and build as the rest of us, but his close-cropped haircut and posture made him look like an MI5 agent. He had a private security firm that protected high-calibre people, including our other brother, Andrew, who was a famous actor. I found out a few months ago that James provided security agents for royals, too, not only in the UK, but also abroad.

“Fuck me, that’s an occasion. In that case, we need to celebrate. I bet all of us would leave this place with women by our sides if we could.” Matthews cheered, already drinking a cocktail of some sort. He winked at me.

“Spencer, indeed it’s a surprise to see you.” James raised his head from his phone. His amber eyes were studying me closely. He had always been a complicated man. He got on better with Andrew than me.

“What about me, you fucker? I dragged that bastard here so he could have some fun before Maja breaks up from school,” Rupert asked.

“You don’t need to keep up with appearances, but Spencer must keep a low profile. You shouldn’t be here, especially tonight,” James pointed out.

I didn't know what he was talking about, but he pissed me off.

He pretended he didn’t care about my position and then he offered unsolicited advice on what I should and shouldn’t do.

“What the fuck is your issue, mate? Is this about the housing policy in parliament recently? That’s what you’re pissed about?” I growled, frustrated.

James was also a businessman through and through, and sometimes, my party’s stand on some policies made his life complicated, particularly when passed. He was always the first one to voice any concerns, but lately, he had been keeping his distance. Also, I couldn’t see how a housing policy would affect him in particular. Of course, this was the one my own party opposed—I supposed he enjoyed the upheaval this created for me.

Rupert and Matthews lobbed their gazes between us, baffled. Then the pretty waitress came back with another round of drinks, so the tension eased up a little. I didn't know why he had such a problem with me being here.

“You hired the woman who showed up in your house as an escort as a nanny, Spencer.” James lifted the drink to his lips but not breaking eye contact with me.
