“Veronica didn't know that this video would go viral when she posted it. She didn’t seduce you,” I explained. “And I've no idea what you think you know about me, but I had no agenda. I never claimed to be an escort. It was just one huge misunderstanding.”

“Don’t bullshit me. You came to him as an escort, but you got hired as Maja’s nanny. You and your roommate must have planned this. I've to admit, it was a great plan, but Spencer isn't that stupid, and the sooner he realises, the quicker he'll get rid of you,” he said.

“Planning what exactly?” Was this guy for real?

“You tell me.”

“You’re delusional. I've nothing to hide, and clearly, you’re the one with issues.” Why was I even trying to explain myself to him? “We have nothing else to talk about.”

I turned around to leave, but he grasped my arm and squeezed it hard.

“Was it her idea? She orchestrated this whole thing because she wanted to have access to Spencer, right?” he asked.

“Let go of me right now,” I snapped through gritted teeth. I didn't know what this man was even talking about and what Veronica had to do with any of it.

He snickered, so I grabbed his shoulder and kneed him right between his legs as hard as I could. Rupert released my hand and howled, going down on the ground. Then Maja walked back inside the castle, followed by Spencer and his two brothers. She frowned, staring at her uncle, who was still groaning with pain, rolling on the grass.

“Uncle Rupert, what happened? Why are you rolling on the grass?”

“What the hell happened to you?” Spencer asked, while the other two stared blankly at a moaning Rupert.

“Your brother acted like a total arsehole, so I put him in his place. Come on, Maja, let’s go play,” I said and walked out, heading to the kitchen, holding her hand. My whole body was shaking with fury.

Rupert really thought Veronica and I had orchestrated the whole thing because we were after their money? He couldn’t have sounded more ridiculous.

It had been a mistake, a misunderstanding, and yet I was the one being called a liar.

Chapter Eighteen

Spencer

“What the fuck happened, Rupert?”

“She must have kicked him between the legs.” Andrew chuckled, taking a sip of his drink.

James was impassively eyeing our pathetic brother, then shook his head.

I kneeled in front of him, wondering what he had said to make Laura lose control like that. He obviously must have insulted her if she’d reacted this way, which was pretty funny.

“What the hell did you say to her?” I pressed.

“Fuck off!” he growled.

“You can deal with him. I’m going to talk to Laura,” I said and left them to it.

I didn’t speak to Laura until later because my father drew me back to the kitchen, asking me to make sure the meat was cooked to our liking.

Rupert came out of the toy house looking awfully incensed, and I warned him to stay away from Laura.

“Are you going to tell me what happened over there?” I asked Laura, finally catching her by the downstairs bathroom.

Maja was playing with Rupert once again, who kept glaring at Laura from across the garden.

She folded her arms and hesitated for a long moment before answering.

“I don’t know exactly what happened between him and my roommate on Friday night, but he accused me of orchestrating this whole thing—our first meeting when you believed I was … you know … so I could take advantage of your position.”

I rubbed my jaw, making a mental note to tell him to stay the fuck out of my business. I could still hardly believe that the girl he wasn’t able to get out of his head for two long years was Laura’s roommate. Besides, Rupert claimed he didn’t do relationships, and yet it seemed like he was after Veronica. This whole thing was pure fucking coincidence—it had to be.
