“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I'm still processing what happened in that club. Anyway, change of plans. You’re going on a date night. Everything is arranged, so let’s pick out an outfit.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. A date? With who?”

Her eyes gleamed with mischief.

“A very handsome CEO who Brenda met the other day. You’re free, and you need to have a good time. Trust me on this, girl. You need to go on a date to forget all about Spencer Banks.”

Chapter Twenty

Spencer

“What about Africa? Have you ever been there? I mean, that’s a silly question. Of course, you must have travelled there for business at least.” Caroline took a sip of her champagne.

For the first time in my life, I’d let Jeremy arrange this date for me, and I had never been more bored. The guy was a sucker for romance, and in the past few months, he had been pestering me about my ratings that would surely go up if I indulged in dating. I wasn’t convinced, but I hoped my relenting would get him off my back for a bit.

Caroline was blonde, beautiful, and sounded smart, too, but not for me. In an ideal world, I would have asked Tanya out on a date instead. She would have been more suited to me, and in the end, I would have been with her, too. Well, in a scenario where I wasn’t the prime minister of a country, with a certain image and responsibilities to uphold, that might have worked.

“Travelling for work isn’t the same. I never get to see anything because I'm always too busy with meetings, and also there's a security protocol.” I looked around the restaurant.

We were seated upstairs on the first floor in one of the discreet rooms, so I didn’t have to worry about being seen by other guests.

Jeremy knew exactly what I was after. He’d assured me that Caroline would be happy to satisfy me, and that was the main reason why I was sitting in front of her right now. I dragged my hand through my hair and took a sip of scotch, mulling over thoughts of Laura.

I’d purposely avoided her this week because I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about her. I was suddenly so glad that she was not staying in the apartment. She’d actually texted me today, asked me to get my act together and start coming home for dinner, or she was going to quit. She made me feel guilty, hence why I’d gone ahead with the date. To forget.

How is that working for you, Spencer?

“Right, of course,” she replied.

The waiter finally brought us desserts. I glanced at the door. No one could see us from where we were seated, but I had the best view of the whole restaurant. My men were sitting at the next table over, enjoying their steaks.

“Tell me about your social life. Lori has seen you at many banquets, you must enjoy the attention.” She smiled.

God, she sounded so mundane, borderline rude and tacky, and despite her having a degree in political science, we had little to talk about. Maybe I just had to be straight with her and let her know this wasn’t working. However, as I got ready to express my thoughts, something drew my attention to the restaurant entrance.

That something was Laura, who had just walked in.

For a moment, I thought there was something wrong with my vision. How was this possible—out of all the restaurants in London, she comes here? With some guy, too …

Did she have a brother? No, he couldn’t be, not with that smile and obvious possessive gesture, particularly with his hand on her lower back.

I ground my teeth.

“I don’t like the attention, Caroline, and that is the main reason I chose this place.” I wondered why the universe enjoyed messing with my head so much.

Laura and her companion were now seated in the middle of the main dining area on the ground floor, so I could see everything that went on. Who the hell was this guy?

She looked stunning in a flowing, stylish purple maxi dress. She laughed when he said something to her while they perused the menu. It was clear now they were on a date.

“Spencer, are you even listening to me?”

Caroline’s voice brought me back to her. I hadn’t even touched my dessert, and now, I really didn’t want it anymore. Even a messy, sexy session with Caroline in my fuck pad wasn’t appealing.

I released a breath. She appeared annoyed while I was in another world, sweat beading along my forehead and nape.

“Sorry about that. I got distracted for a minute,” I told her. The understatement of the century.
