She was staring at me with her lips slightly parted, still looking like she was in shock. She didn’t need to say anything. I knew she was afraid of the future. I had been a serial bachelor until now. I was allowed to change my mind and have a relationship, and maybe our relationship would cause a sensation, but I was done sneaking around. It was bloody exhausting. The media would go crazy for a few weeks, but after that, things would settle down and we could officially be a couple.

We started eating, and Laura moaned when she tasted the squid while the musicians were playing. That sound went straight through my groin, hardening my cock again.

“My mum loves classical music. I need to bring her here one day. My parents have never been to Italy,” she said, once the waiter had collected our plates.

I wiped my mouth with a napkin, relaxed. I realised for the first time since being in Sicily that I felt happy, content, and at peace with myself, because I had her next to me.

“We will be coming here every year, so don’t worry, we can bring them next time,” I said.

Her left eyebrow lifted.

“Spencer, this whole thing is wonderful, but you told me yourself that everything between us is only physical,” she said, sounding wary.

I reached for her hand across the table. My heart was thumping loudly. I was a cold motherfucker most of the time, but with Laura I was back to being a normal guy.

“I don’t want this to be only physical. I know I told you that I couldn’t commit, but you’re making my world brighter, Laura. I allowed Samantha to break me all those years ago, and I haven’t been able to trust any other woman since, but with you it’s different,” I said, unable to actually say what I fucking wanted to. I didn’t even know why I was suddenly so nervous. “These past few days have been wonderful, and I've never been so relaxed. When we get back to London, I want to let people know that I've someone in my life. I want to make this fucking official, if you’ll let me.”

She gasped again, and for a long moment I could only hear the music. I didn’t want to make this decision without her, she needed to tell me that this was exactly what she wanted, too.

“There will be a media storm, and we’ll both be in the spotlight then,” she said.

“As long as you’re okay with all this then I'm happy, Laura. No more hiding. We are both adults, and I'm the PM. I’m single, so wanting a relationship shouldn’t surprise anyone.”

“Yes, Spencer, I’m scared, but I think it’s the right step, but let’s wait until we get back to London to discuss this with Maja. She’s having such a great time here, and I don’t want to ruin anything,” she said.

I nodded, then sipped the wine. I wasn’t too happy about this arrangement, but Laura was right. This whole thing was very fresh and still fragile, so we had to take it slow. My daughter needed to be protected.

“I think my parents are going to freak. They supported me so much when I was with Jake, but all the attention and press got to them later on.”

I growled with anger when she brought that wanker’s name up. She had to forget about him.

“I’m going to talk to your parents at some point. We’ll arrange for them to come to Number 10 and have dinner, so they'll see that I'm not fucking around,” I assured her.

The waiter appeared before Laura could say anything more about my idea, followed by another two bringing us the main course. It was pasta with seafood, and it smelled absolutely divine. I waited for Laura to taste it first, and when she did, she let go of another moan.

“I think you were right, this is the best pasta dish that I ever tasted,” she exclaimed.

I was suddenly glad that the food distracted her from questioning whether it was a good idea for us to go public or not. We continued to eat while listening to the music, and by the time our plates were cleared, the musicians played another classic. I kept staring at Laura. She seemed lost in her own thoughts with this view, so I took another sip of my wine. She was beautiful, and my heart pounded as I took her features in, trying to picture her as my wife. Fuck, I didn’t know where this was even coming from, but she dominated my thoughts.

“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked.

She finally looked at me.

“I was thinking about my sister,” she admitted.

I had no idea how I didn’t know about this. Laura had been vetted, but there was nothing in the file about a sister.

“Your sister?”

She glanced down at her hands.

“You probably already know that I was adopted. I never managed to find my biological parents. I've a sister, she’s a few years older than me, but I've no idea what happened to her. I don’t even remember her. She must have been adopted before me,” she explained, sounding sad.

“Have you tried searching for her?” I asked.

“Yes, my dad started helping me, but we didn’t get anywhere, and I never had enough money to hire someone who could find her,” she explained. “I was born in Poland, and it was never easy to find anything. We needed to hire a translator and a private detective.”

Then the waiter arrived again as I was going to ask her more questions, yet again enquiring whether everything was all right. I told him in Italian that nothing could ever be more perfect than this moment. After that, we fell into another conversation about Laura’s education, but the subject of her sister remained in my thoughts. That evening, I made a decision to find the woman for her. I had all the means and resources, and this would make her happy. She didn’t know her real parents, but it would be good for her to be reunited with her sibling. I kept listening to her, believing that Laura deserved all the happiness in the world, and I was willing to do anything for her, because I was slowly falling for her.
