Spencer smirked at me as though letting me know he still wasn’t done with me yet. I had never had this kind of sex before. It was so rough, and my jaw still ached.

Beatrice came back after putting Luca down to sleep, and we chatted until late. By the time we got back to our villa, Maja was fast asleep in the back seat of the car. Once we’d carried her inside and settled her into bed without waking, we tumbled into bed and I nodded off with Spencer snuggling into my side.

The last two weeks passed quickly, and Spencer’s family visited us a few more times at the villa. Spencer told Francesco to limit the number of cousins and brothers he was bringing when he was in Italy. Maja couldn’t stop talking about her cousins, and I got close to Beatrice, babysitting Luca and the other kids while she went out on a date with her husband.

Spencer had changed into a new man—kind, less obnoxious, and caring when he was relaxed. Spencer opening up about his past made me feel reassured that he trusted me and that our relationship was strong. Sam had wounded him badly, and that was the main reason why he didn’t trust women. Apparently, he’d been through therapy a few years ago, and he had attempted to have relationships, but since none of them had worked, he’d gone back to just sleeping around.

We didn’t see Rupert at all in the last week of August. He told Spencer he was somewhere in Croatia and he’d meet us back in London.

Maja, Spencer, and I developed a new routine. In the last week of our holiday, Spencer told me he wanted to cook for us. The housekeeper wasn’t too pleased with this new arrangement because I caught her walking around muttering and grumbling in Italian when he’d informed her of this. We were all used to security that seemed to follow us everywhere, although when we were in the villa, they stayed in the background, giving us some privacy. I didn’t know if I was ever going to be used to this lifestyle, and if I dated Spencer, I would probably have my own security, too.

“Maybe we should slow down a little when we get back.”

We sat on the plane, returning home. It was the beginning of September, and school was restarting next week.

Spencer had his hand on my thigh, and he was reading a book.

“What do you mean? Do you want me to stop making love to you? Is that what you’re saying?” he whispered.

He kept his voice low, and in addition, Maja had headphones on and she was sitting two rows in front of us in the small aircraft, so she couldn’t hear him. Thankfully.

The man was a sex machine. He was almost forty, and I wondered if he was ever going to leave me alone because he was constantly all over me.

“Yes, Spencer, because we are going back to the usual routine, so we won’t be able to have sex all the time.” I leaned closer. “My body needs a break from your giant dick. Besides, I’ll be due to get my period again soon.”

“You love it, so stop moaning, and I don’t mind getting dirty when I go down on you later at Number 10.” He winked at me.

My jaw dropped.

I closed my eyes, trying to breathe when the image of him on his knees in his private office flashed through my mind.

“Spencer, I'm serious. We have to be careful. You’re too much, and you know what will happen if the press finds out about us. There won’t be a moment’s peace,” I said as he moved his hand discreetly upwards, right under my dress.

“Trust me, they won’t find out. Besides, what if they do? I’m a single father and not doing anything wrong. I told you, you’re mine, and we both agreed to give this a real shot. I want to tell the whole world about us,” he said.

When the plane touched down in London, it was raining. It felt good to finally feel the cool air. Jason took us home, and by late afternoon, we were settled in the living room in Number 10, ready to jump into the new routine after the weekend.

“Thank you, Spencer. I had the most amazing time, and I know I said I wouldn’t catch any feelings, but I think I'm falling in love with you,” I whispered, breathless. We were snuggled together in his bed. This was a bad idea, but he had proven to me he was serious and I wasn’t just another fling.

I waited for him to respond, and when I leaned over to see why he wasn’t saying anything, I saw that he was already fast asleep.

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Spencer

We came back from Sicily several days later, and as soon as I stepped onto the English soil I felt a little sad that it was time to get back to reality. Maja had just gone back to school, and I still hadn’t told anyone what was going on between Laura and I because she was adamant that nothing should change right now. I had to talk to Jeremy and my parents, before I announced it to the world, but things had been so hectic. There was yet another crisis in parliament that I had to deal with.

It was Friday evening and I was still in the office going over some paperwork for the budget. This evening one of the advisors brought me the Chancellor’s Red Box. The box was used by ministers to carry and transport official ministerial papers. Tonight, I was supposed to go over some budget details with Jeremy but he’d vanished twenty minutes ago and hadn't come back yet.

My mind kept drifting back to Laura. She was probably in the flat upstairs or maybe in the kitchen since it was pretty late. I was just about to pick up the phone and ask her if she wanted to have dinner together when there was a knock on my door. I frowned, glancing at the clock, knowing that I wasn't expecting anyone. Cath had cleared my schedule for this evening.

"Dad."

It was Maja, she peeked round the door, looking hesitant to enter. I got up and walked up towards her, wondering what she was doing here.

"What's up Maja? Where is Laura?" I asked, a little concerned that Maja was able to come straight in here and none of the security agents had stopped her. I knew they were around, even if they were not right outside the door. Maja always managed to sneak past them somehow.

"She went to check on dinner, so I decided to come see you," Maja said, and then placed her hands on her hips, giving me an intense look. "We need to talk Dad."
