I had ten minutes before we went live.

“Yes,” I replied. I wanted to scream at her that I didn’t want to do this fucking interview, but Samantha was outside. She was on set, and if I pulled out of this, she wouldn’t hesitate to leak the information about Spencer using escorts. I didn’t care about my own reputation, but this wasn’t just about me. Other people close to me were involved. Veronica had already quit working for Emperor, but Rupert was still a partner. I couldn’t risk it.

Veronica had gone into hysterics when I’d told her what I was planning. I hadn’t said anything about Samantha and her blackmail because I already knew what she would say about that. She would have urged me to stand up to Samantha, but there was too much at stake. Veronica wouldn’t understand my reasons. I loved Spencer very much and I was willing to protect him and Maja even if that meant that I had to sacrifice our love.

“Come on. Let’s go. Everyone is waiting for you,” she said.

I stood and glanced at myself in the mirror, ensuring I was decent enough. My family and my friends would hear about the intimate details of my relationship with Spencer, all because my sister wanted her five minutes in the spotlight.

I walked out of my dressing room on shaky legs. Louise was already waiting for me. This was her show, and she was going to get a big promotion afterwards.

I pushed my legs to move onto the set, and my stomach churned. I took a deep breath, and then someone shouted.

“You can’t go in there, it’s not allowed!”

There was a commotion in the corridor that led to the studio.

“Please step aside, it’s the Prime Minister of this country, so show some respect,” another voice stated calmly. It was James, Spencer’s brother, but what was he doing here?

Then my heart stopped because right behind him was Spencer himself.

“Prime Minister … sir, this isn't a good time. We are just about to go live.”

Two men from the television crew tried to stop him. Samantha and Louise also noticed as they were approaching.

“Unfortunately, there won’t be a show tonight.” James adjusted his cufflinks.

I fixed my gaze on Spencer, trying to snap out of the shock.

“What’s going on here?” Louise glared at them.

“Laura, come on, let’s talk. I've something important to tell you.” Spencer moved towards me.

“I can’t, I've to do—”

“That’s right, Prime Minister. She’s just about to do the interview, and don’t stop her, because you won’t like the consequences.” Samantha placed her hands on her hips and gave him a severe look, but he ignored her.

He stared at me, his eyes burning into mine.

“Sam, please, I don’t like this as much as you do, but you’re going to want to hear me out in the room next door.” James turned towards Samantha.

Spencer grabbed my hand and dragged me away.

“Spencer, what are you doing? This is really not a good time—”

“Be quiet, Laura, I know everything. I know that Samantha blackmailed you to do this.” He cut me off, suddenly coming close, cupping my face and gazing right into my eyes.

I parted my lips, wanting to ask him so many questions, but then he kissed me, devouring my mouth with so much passion and urgency, like it might have been his last chance to do so. I was frozen as he held the back of my head and brought me in closer. He sent my body into a spiral of sensations, tasting like pinewood and scotch. I could hear nothing but the drumming of my blood in my ears. I felt nothing but the softness of his lips and the tingles of heat beneath my skin. I let go of a moan, and he groaned into my mouth. Pulling away to catch our breath, we stared at each other with melting desperation.

“Spencer, she’s going to tell the whole world how we met. If I don’t do the interview, then she'll leak the information about you using the escort service.” I tried to catch my breath and slow down my frantic heart.

He held me close, still staring at me with that hungry look.

“Don’t worry about Sam. She’s in huge trouble as it is, and soon, she'll be very busy with her own affairs. She won’t dare to release any evidence against me. Let’s go home now. Maja is still pretty mad at me, and she wants you home.” He dismissed my concerns.

I shook my head, retreating.

“I’m not going anywhere until you explain everything.”
