“No one said you had to be. We have lawyers. I need a right hand who’s serious about this family and our expansion. Someone I can do business with and who sees my vision for Nuova Notte moving forward. That someone is you.” He gets up from his chair and leans on his father’s desk, waiting for his sister’s reply.

“I married into another crime syndicate. Isn’t that a conflict of interest?” As far as I know, she hasn’t discussed with her father how her role may change since our union.

“Papà agrees it’s not an issue. If anything, it strengthens our bond with The Brigade. You’ll have a foot in both camps and can serve as a liaison. You already do in an unofficial capacity with a few of our allies. Why not make it official?”

Maddalena’s face is riddled with indecision. She clearly wasn’t expecting this. “I know you don’t need my input, but I think you should take it. You’re the most qualified for the job.”

“Do I have the option of saying no?” She gives him a stiff laugh.

“Not really,” he replies.

“Okay, I’m in.”

She gets up and extends her hand, but her brother brings her in for a hug. “The first female Capo. The first female Consigliere. We’re going to have to call a cleaning service with all this glass you're shattering. I’ll see you at dinner.”

He leaves, and it’s just the two of us left in her father’s office. She comes to me, and I pull her down onto my lap. “Maddalena Harleigh Rose Vettore-Cameron. The first female Consigliere of Nuova Notte. How does it feel?”

“Insane,” she breathes as she runs her hand through my hair.

I take her chin between my thumb and finger, bringing her face down to mine for a kiss. Passion morphs it from a quick peck to something raw and all-consuming. “I’m proud of you, kitten.”

“Really?” She beams down at me.

“Always. You’re my dangerous little killer. Together, we’re going to take over this city. Build a family. Change history. Bonnie and Clyde.”

“Yeah, G, Bonnie and Clyde.”
