CHAPTER FIVE

Kody

HOW HE managed to dodge this conversation for two days, he wasn’t sure. He hadn’t had to talk to Cora at the bar because she’d been drunk off her ass when he’d hauled her home to drop her off on her couch.

He would’ve taken her to her bed, but she’d insisted on the couch, and the second she’d laid down, she’d started snoring. He’d grabbed a bucket to place on the floor next to her head, and had left some water, painkillers, and crackers on the coffee table for her, then tucked her in before going home.

His luck had run out now, though, and Cora had stalked him all the way to the firehouse on her day off just to get him to talk. She had her hands on her hips and was looking at him with determination in her eyes.

“You’d better start spilling, or I’ll make you spill.”

He groaned. “Fuck. Fine.”

Her grin made him flip her off.

“So?” She arched a brow at him. “Tell me about your bad boy.”

Kody pressed his lips together with a shake of his head, then let out a sigh.

“He’s not a bad boy. He’s… sweet.”

Cora pulled a face that made him roll his eyes.

“And somehow it’s worse,” he said with a sigh. “I so don’t want to throw myself into another relationship. Especially one that’s doomed from the start, but goddamn do I want to. He’s just… wow.”

Cora dropped her head into her hands with a groan.

“How did this even happen?” she muttered, then looked up at him. “I just wanted you to have a great sexual experience to get over he who must not be named.”

“Voldemort?”

Cora made a cross with her fingers and hissed at him.

“Or Ruben?”

Cora’s expression turned murderous as she mimicked cocking a gun.

Kody put up his hands and shook his head.

“No killing anyone, please,” he said.

“Why do I always walk into the weirdest conversations between you two?” Ollie asked.

“You wouldn’t if you stopped snooping,” Cora said, glaring at Ollie who smiled back at her while flipping her off with both hands.

“Right,” Cora said cheerfully which had Kody cringing in anticipation. “I’ll be off, then. I hope you guys have a quiet day,” she said, batting her lashes innocently at them before blowing them a kiss.

“Oh, Jesus,” Ollie muttered while Kody winced.

Cora just cursed them.

“We’re gonna die,” Ollie said under his breath.

Kody’s phone buzzing had him tensing up. He wouldn’t be surprised if it was something bad.

He slowly pulled out his phone and looked with his eyes half closed as he unlocked it. There was a message from Ace, and he didn’t relax until he’d read it twice.

The curse was already hard at work.
