Anger was building up inside him at record speed and he was so close to going off at the guy that he jumped when the door opened.

A middle-aged man in a suit stepped inside and said, “Detective. Give us a moment.”

Ace glared at Boscoe as he got up. He quite enjoyed seeing the sour look on the man’s face as he walked out.

When the door closed behind Boscoe, the new guy sat down in Boscoe’s vacant seat and said, “Ace. I’m Captain Adler. Chris’ old boss.”

As much as he would like to relax knowing that, he couldn’t. He didn’t know what Adler wanted. Or if he was on his side or not.

“Detective Dipshit told me I’m not under arrest.”

Adler’s lips twitched but he quickly schooled his expression.

“You aren’t. Yet.”

“What does that mean?”

“I’ve seen the dashcam and bodycam footage. I would like to thank you for saving all those people.”

“Saving them wasn’t my priority,” Ace said, watching the man closely. Did he want to save them? Yeah. Had his only thought in that moment been of Kody? Also, yeah.

“I know, but you still saved them.”

He leaned back in his chair, unsure where the man was going with this.

“The problem we’re facing is your affiliation with the Disciples. If not for that, the media would have labeled you a hero by now,” Adler said.

“But instead, I’m the bad guy?”

“Well, there’s the question of your motives. You’re a criminal by association, and therefor suspect.”

“But you don’t have anything on us.” He tapped the diamond patch on his cut. “All you’ve got is this.”

“That and you stole one of my best detectives.”

He dropped back in his chair. “So, it’s payback?”

“Not for me. Some of my detectives certainly hold a grudge, though.”

“Great,” he grumbled.

“They’ll be professional,” Adler said, his expression serious. “They know better than to fuck up an investigation.”

Ace snorted before he could help himself.

Adler gave him a disappointed look, then stood and said, “For now, don’t leave town and for fucks sake, stay out of trouble.”

Ace got up, too, eyeing Adler’s hand for a moment before shaking it.

Kody

Sitting at the hospital waiting was grueling and not just because his friend was fighting for his life but because he had no idea what would happen to Ace. They’d all given their statements and when they’d been pulled off their shift, they’d all gone to the hospital. Cora was asleep next to him, her head on his shoulder and her hand in his. Ollie was sitting on the other side of her, his face pale as he stared off into space. He’d been right next to Dennis when he’d been shot. If the cops hadn’t opened fire, he might’ve been in an operating room right now, too.

Chief Garcia and Captain Benson were sitting with Dennis’ wife and kids. The were obviously distraught. The wife more than the kids. They were too young to truly understand. Cap was keeping them occupied while Chief Garcia tried to console Dennis’ wife.

Cora jerked awake and sat up to squint at Kody.

“Any news?” she croaked out.
