“Fuck!” I heard Kade curse quietly, and I knew they were likely both overcome with relief. I had no doubt all five of her brothers, as well as her parents had been searching for Evie night and day since she was taken months before.

“Talk to us, honey. Are you really okay?” Kyle urged, and he was definitely emotional now.

“I am. I’m so sorry I haven’t called you sooner,” she sniffled. “I…I wanted to, but I…I was scared.”

“We’ve been searching for you. We were so worried,” Kade told her. “But we don’t care about anything, as long as you’re safe,” he added.

“Is everyone okay? Matt? There was an accident with his car. Is…is he okay?” Evie asked tearfully.

“He’s fine. Everyone is fine. We’ve all just been searching for you. We knew something happened when your body wasn’t with the others,” Kyle said.

“Kyle. Don’t,” Kade cut him off.

“No. It’s alright. S-something did happen. He…the killer…he let me go,” she was struggling to get the words out she was crying so hard. She turned to look at me and I knew what she needed.

“Guys. Evie is safe with me right now. The killer let her go after about three weeks. He left her in Boston and told her if she spoke to anyone or tried to contact any of you, he would kill her and all of you. She tried to reach out to Matt secretly, but this psycho found out and messed with Matt’s brakes. That’s how she knows he had an accident. She was too terrified to reach out to any of you. She figured he wouldn’t know about me, so she came here. She’s been here a couple of days now.”

“I told you those brakes were too new to be faulty,” Kade hissed.

“What do you mean he let you go? Why would he do that?” Kyle asked.

“I can’t…not like this…not over the phone,” Evie squeaked through her tears.

“She’s been through a lot, guys,” I sighed as I held her tightly against my front.

“Do we know who this guy is? We’ve been working on the case for months, but we have Jack shit,” Kade said.

“Evie remembered some details, which we’re working on. I have some guys who live with me who are helping. I think we might be able to identify him,” I told them.

“Some guys who live with you? Who?” Kyle demanded.

“They’re guys that I met in the military. Good men. She’s safe Kyle, I swear to you.”

“He’s right. I’m really okay. The guys have been amazing. They’ve taken care of me,” Evie assured her brothers.

“You need to come home, Evie. We can keep you safe here. We can get you personal security if we need to,” Kade said.

“No! I can’t. He’ll be watching you guys and he’ll know. I can’t…I won’t risk him hurting any of you!” Evie cried, panicked.

“Easy, sweetheart,” I soothed. “It’s going to be okay. No one is getting hurt.”

“He’s right. We’ll make sure everyone is safe here. You don’t need to worry about that,” Kyle agreed.

I felt someone approaching behind me and turned to find Nick, still in lounge pants and nothing else. He walked over and looked to me with question.

“Ev, why don’t you go with Nick and clean up a little, okay? Let me speak to your brothers?” I suggested.

“Come on, babe. We’ll just give them a minute and you can talk to your brothers again once you’re feeling better, okay?” Nick urged as he leaned in so Evie could see him.

“Okay,” she agreed. “I’ll b-be right back, guys. D-don’t hang up, okay?” she said to the phone.

“We’ll be here, little bit,” Kyle told her, and she smiled tearfully.

Nick wrapped his arm around her and led her off towards the stairs. I watched as they ascended, Evie looking worryingly shaky the whole way.

“Sorry guys. She was getting really upset. She just needs a minute,” I told them once I was sure she was out of earshot.

“What did that fucker do to her? No way he just let her go,” Kade asked angrily. I looked to the stairs to assure myself that she was gone, then thought better of it and picked up the cell, moving through to the garage, closing the door behind me.
