“Yeah. Sounds good,” Aleks agreed as he looked to the others for their agreement too.

“That means we’re trusting you completely with Evie’s safety. Can you handle that?” Kade asked slightly aggressively.

“We can,” Aleks replied confidently.

“If anything happens to her…” Kyle started.

“Kyle!” I cried. “Don’t you dare threaten them. They’re risking everything just by having me here.”

“Nothing is going to happen to Evie. We’ll keep her safe,” Harris pledged as he looked to me so intensely I couldn’t look away.

“And you really think you can identify The Number Killer?” dad asked.

“Evie has given us a lot to go on. She did great at remembering everything she could. No promises, but I think we can, yes,” Nick spoke up.

“And if you do, you’ll pass the information to the authorities, won’t you? I don’t want Evie put in danger again,” mom panicked.

“Yes. That’s the plan. I’m a detective. I’ll make sure the information gets to the correct people,” Nick assured her.

“It’s going to be alright, mom. We have a plan and we’re all being careful,” I added.

“I just want you home, honey. I…I miss you so much,” she told me.

“We all want you home, as soon as possible,” Xander said.

“I will be, soon.” I didn’t know how true that was considering everything going on in my head, but what else could I say in that moment. “Just all please try not to worry too much, okay? I’m good.”

“We will. You just stay safe for us…please Evie. Just stay safe,” dad pleaded.

“I will.”

“We have her, sir. We’ll take good care of her,” Kailan added as he squeezed my hand in his.

“We owe you guys. We won’t forget this,” Matt said.

“Take good care of yourself, Evie. Remember it’s okay not to be okay. Lean on others when you need to,” Livy told me, and once again I was holding back a sob at the understanding I felt in those words. She knew what I was dealing with. She had survived her own Hell.

“We’re all here for you, little sis. Even if we can’t speak, we’re with you,” Cole said.

“I know,” My voice wavered as I fought to hold it together. “Stay safe too. I love you all so much.”

“We love you too, honey. We’ll see you soon, okay?” mom pushed, and I nodded, even though they couldn’t see me.

“S-see you all soon.” I leaned forward to end the call just as the first sob erupted from me. In a second I found myself in Kailan’s lap, his huge arms banded tightly around me as I sobbed into his shirt.

“It’s going to be okay. We’re going to find a way to end this,” he whispered as he held me. He comforted me with little gentle kisses on the top of my head as I cried a little more, then just hid against him for a while.

When I eventually lifted my head, the tears having calmed enough for me to breathe easier, the others were all just watching me with concern.

“Tell us what you need right now, sweetheart?” Harris asked.

“I’m okay. It was just a lot and I guess…I…I’m just not great with my emotions right now,” I admitted. “There’s just a lot going on up here,” I pointed to my temple.

“Do you want to talk about some of it with us?” Aleks suggested.

“I…I’ve just been thinking about what you said…about me staying here when all of this is over,” I started a little nervously.

“You like the idea?” Nick asked hopefully.
