Happily, Dad walked into the room at that point and distracted her attention when he started talking about food.

With my parents both distracted, I sat down on Mom’s plush new couch with the magic book and went over the spell we were about to cast.

LEO

“Come on, man!We’ve gotta go!”

Ever since I told Mason that we had to meet Tania at our place at one p.m., he’d been dragging his feet. Why he’d do that when we were so close to our goal, I didn’t know.

Now, he’d finally put his tools down and was washing his hands like a germophobe.Which he was not.The man didn’t shower every day, and as a wolf, he drank out of dirty puddles.

This was getting ridiculous.I checked my watch for the hundredth time, running a frazzled hand through my hair.“Seriously, Mase.I’m going to leave without you.”

I grabbed my keys out of my back pocket and turned away from him. What did I actually need him for anyway? We’d paid for the gym membership already, so technically our debt with Tania was done.

The way he was acting it was probably best I went alone anyway.Tania was… touchy. And Mason seemed to know exactly which button to push to make her mad.Probably best to avoid that today, if possible.

When I reached the truck, I didn’t hesitate or check to see if my brother was hard on my heels.I just pulled open the door and jumped in.Moments later, Mason hopped in the passenger side, breathing hard.I had to assume he’d run after me.

“Finally pulled your finger out?”I asked, turning the key in the ignition and throwing the truck into gear.

Mason threw me a dirty glare, then focused on the road as I whipped through the side streets, racing to get home before Tania arrived.

Mase gasped once, grabbing the door handle at one point when I took a corner too quickly, but he didn’t say anything. He knew I hated being late, and being late for our mate?Grrr… I could have punched the idiot in the head.

Despite my haste, she got there before us.A fancy black car was parked out the front of our place and Tania was standing in the front yard, staring up at the old townhouse we called home.

I parked on the street and jumped out, racing for the woman who was about to make our dreams come true.“I am so sorry we’re late.Work was… crazy.”

She turned and gave me a beautiful smile.“No problem. We just got here.”

An older woman stepped down off the porch, smiling politely.

“Oh, hi.”I called out to her.“I didn’t even see you there.”

Tania’s mom, Sue, looked nothing like her daughter. She was blonde and petite, and just, not Tania.

Sue grinned at me.“I’m itching to get inside and see if I can do some renovations for you guys.”

My jaw dropped.“You wanna renovate our house?”

Tania laughed nervously.“Mom’s just over zealous.”

“No.I’m serious,” she said.“Let me in.”

Mason had joined us now and he was the one who said, “Yes ma’am,” before walking up to the front door and letting her in.

I could hear her asking questions and Mase answering, in clipped single syllables.

Tania sighed and shook her head.“I can’t believe she’s in there renovating.Seriously, she has no shame.”

I glanced through the front door, seeing a sparkle and a flash of silver light.“What’s she doing in there?”

Tania shrugged.“I have no idea. You might wanna go in there and see.”

I turned back and stared straight at Tania.“I’m exactly where I wanna be.She can do whatever she wants in there.”
