Me: for a few months now

Pop: funny how the right woman helps settle a man.

Me: we’re just friends

Pop: GIF of an old man slapping his leg and laughing.

Slipping the phone back into my pocket, I headed for the elevator.

“Hey, Damiano.” Cortney appeared in the hallway. He glanced behind him, to where Liv was watching us and giving us a thumbs-up.

As he turned back to me, she stepped into Beckett’s office and shut the door.

“Can we talk?” Cortney tipped his head to his office door, making his blond man bun bounce.

It was weird seeing him in a suit all the time, but now that he’d taken over as the team’s GM, I’d have to get used to it. Seemed crazy to me that he’d gone from playing to running the team, but no one would second guess Beckett Langfield.

I stepped into the room I hadn’t been in since Cortney’d had it redone. The shelves filled with books and even the table covered in a puzzle were on point for the man.

The jersey hanging on the wall, though, had my brows shooting up. That was a weird choice.

“Beckett.” He shook his head. “He asked if I wanted a framed jersey, and for some asinine reason, he thought I’d want his.”

The big double zero with Langfield on the back was centered on the wall for all to see.

I had to chuckle as I picked up a photo of Cortney and his future stepson, Liam, from one of his bookshelves. “Did you two finish the Porsche?”

They had been redoing a classic car together for the last few months.

Cortney beamed. “Yes, two days before his road test, so I’m officially his favorite.”

The door behind me flew open, and I bobbled the framed photo.

“Are you having a meeting without me?” Beckett rushed into the room, but came to a stop and frowned when he saw me. “Damiano?” He turned and gave Cortney a similar hard look. “Why are we meeting with him?” He focused on me again, now full-on glaring. “What did you do now?”

I held up my hands but kept my mouth shut. I didn’t have the first clue what was going on.

Cortney crossed his arms and rested his hip against his desk. “Didn’t Liv need something?”

“I know when my wife is distracting me. Is this about the puffins? Is there an issue?”

“No.” Not as far as I knew. And there better not be an issue. I’d taken great care to keep things on track for both Avery and Puff.

“Not a distraction. It’s probably just that bet Liv and Dylan have going.” Cortney shrugged.

Beckett’s eyes narrowed on the GM. Cortney’s fiancée was Liv’s best friend, and the four of them, plus their kids, lived with a couple other women and their families. Why Beckett and Cortney had moved in with them instead of insisting they leave the commune situation they had going on was beyond me. It was a crazy situation, but both men seemed to take in stride.

If it were me, I’d have lost my shit by now. I could barely handle living with Bambi. But they lived in a house with at least a dozen people and acted like it was no big deal.

“Didn’t Liv tell you?”

“No.” Beckett worked his jaw from one side to the other.

Cortney shrugged again, plastering on a smirk. “Ah. Probably because Dylan’s winning.”

“Winning what?”

Cortney cocked a brow. “Ya know…who has themostthis week.”
