I grinned, shaking my head. In a weird way, I knew what she meant. My heart felt like it was glowing.

I clipped her hair away from her face and got to work. By the time I was finished styling Sunny, I had two texts waiting for me.

Rhett:Downstairs in front of the Ritz at 6. I hope you’ll come.

Charlie:I’ve got dresses and shoes! What’s your room number?

I stared at my phone, trying to decide what to do. I knew I wanted to meet him, but what was the right thing?

“Rhett’s probably going to have some pretty bad backlash from that video. Some people won’t forgive faking or lying, even if they agree that you have a good reason.” Sunny rolled her eyes. “He must really love you to put his career on the line like that.”

My heart warmed, and I knew it was true.

“Are you going to meet him?” she asked.

It was more than just being truthful, though. We wouldn’t have to hide or sneak anymore. We could be like Beatrice the bride and her new husband amid the turmoil of the Momzilla, enjoying our life despite the unpleasantness lurking in the background.

I looked up and smiled. “Yes.”

Chapter Thirty

I took my things downto the room Sunny had gotten for me. I curled my hair in loose waves and did a gentle cat eye. Charlie and Liam showed up with an armful of gowns and zero guilt on either of their faces.

“I’ve beendyingsince Rhett called with his plan yesterday,” Charlie said.

Liam grinned, flopping back on the bed and turning on the TV while I did Charlie’s makeup. “I haven’t been. We didn’t know if it would work or not until Rhett was able to outbid the other bidders.” He gave a low whistle. “He paid a pretty penny for this date.”

“That’s so romantic,” Charlie said, trying not to move her face while I applied her eyeshadow.

I looked through the gowns they brought and chose an emerald-green one. I hadn’t worn it yet, and it had been sitting in my closet for a while. Charlie zipped me up. “You’re not mad at us, then?”

“I’m not mad at you. But next time, warn me.”

She looked at me. “That would’ve completely ruined the effect of his surprise video. I’m glad you tuned in live so you didn’t have to watch the replay.”

I wouldn’t admit that I watched the replay three times before they arrived.

“You should get going,” Liam said.

I looked at the clock. “Wish me luck. I’ll see you guys there.”

I slipped on my shoes and grabbed my phone and hotel key card. Waiting at the elevator, my heart was hammering. When the doors slid open, my pulse bottomed out.

There was already a man standing in it, his back toward me, taking up as much room as he could.

My heart started up again, and I knew with surety I’d made the right call. I loved this man.

I stepped into the elevator and leaned back against the opposite wall, admiring Rhett from behind. “No mustache today?”

He whipped around as the doors slid closed, his eyes wide. He cut such a good figure in that tux, one hand in his pocket, the other hanging down. Rhett reached over and hit the stop button, jarring the elevator to a halt.

“Rhett!” I said, slapping my hands against the wall behind me for stability. “What if we get stuck in here?!”

“That wouldn’t bother me.”

“We can be alone in literallyso many other places. We don’t have to be suspended in a cement shaft!”

“Sorry.” He did not look sorry at all. His gaze swept down my gown, his eyes darkening. “Where are you headed?”
