“Then how do you know?”

He shrugged. “The fact of the matter is, I know.”

“That’s not answering my question.”

The dark gray suit he was wearing.

The way he was looking at me.

It was all too much to take in at once. It was breathing fire down my neck. By the way he was acting in the past twenty-four hours, I imagined this was only the beginning of whatever trip down memory lane he had planned for me.

We both knew how heavy the load of being in this compromising work relationship would be, and the silence from him was deafening for a second. I swear I could hear his thoughts, and every single one of them included me and our past we couldn’t change.

The flight was only four hours, and it felt as if an eternity was slowly passing us by as we looked at one another. Although, the anxiousness I was feeling wasn’t only about this sudden predicament I found myself in with him but also from the sincerest expression on his face, like he wanted to say so much and didn’t know where to begin.

Why did I agree to this again?

Inhaling in a deep breath, I counted to three before exhaling on four breath counts. If he noticed my unease, he didn’t show it in the least. He wasn’t talking, and he didn’t move from where he was sitting. He just stared at me as if I had all the answers to the questions that were obviously plaguing him.

I breathed in and out a few more times until I couldn’t take his silence anymore and had to beg, “Please tell me how you know.”

“Look at that,” he taunted. “When you want something from me, you’re such a good girl. Here, I thought we weren’t allowed to ask questions about the past. Wasn’t that a clause in your contract?”

“You started it.”

“It wasn’t a question I asked you. It was a statement.”

I shook my head. “You’re the most stubborn man I’ve ever met. Do you know that?”

“You have all the answers to your questions built in, Miss Locke.”

Hearing him say those words didn’t surprise me, but the next ones he willingly shared were staggering, nearly stopping my heart, leaving me awestruck and blindsided when he confessed…

“Mr. Vermont is damn lucky I don’t take every company he owns for cheating on you, beauty.”

ELIAS

I was prepared for the animosity she’d have toward me, but it still hurt like a son of a bitch that she kept blowing off my sincerity.

Instead of losing my temper, I merely added, “I’m done answering your questions.”

“Really?” she bit. “Considering you haven’t answered one. Stop treating me like I’m under you, Mr. Sinclair.”

“But you used to love being under me, on top of me or my favorite, on all fours for me.”

Her mouth parted and I followed the movement of her tongue as she licked her lips as if her mouth was suddenly dry. Within seconds, she abruptly stood.

“We’re here.”

I didn’t allow her any leniency. As she rushed toward the exit, I stood and grabbed her arm to look at me again.

“Don’t walk away from me, beauty.”

“Right… you’re better at it than I am.”

I let her go, feeling the weight of the heavy statement.

“We’re done now.”
