I flicked my wrist to dismiss the flames crackling around me. “I’m sorry. I thought training together in the gym would get your mind off of things, but I guess that was pretty stupid, huh? It’s kind of impossible to not think about the murderous mystery god who got his hands on a powerful immortal weapon.”

“It’s not stupid at all.” Nero set his hands on my shoulders. “But I guess I’m just too tired and raw to be distracted, even by you.”

I folded my arms around him, hugging him to me. “Then what you really need is a nap.”

“Probably.” He squeezed me tightly. “But I’m too agitated to sleep.”

“I suppose it’s just as well,” I sighed. “We have a dinner reservation at the Angel’s Roost in half an hour.”

Nero pulled back just far enough to slide me a carefully-guarded look. “The Angel’s Roost?”

“A new restaurant in town,” I explained. A smile tugged on my lips. “What do you think of the name?”

His eyebrow twitched.

“Ah, like it that much, do you?” I chuckled.

“No.”

“Well, the food is supposed to be good anyway,” I said with a shrug, then crossed the room to snatch my water bottle off the floor.

“Pandora.”

I pivoted around, water bottle in hand. “Yes?”

“Did you select this restaurant solely based on its ridiculous name?”

“Of course.” I unscrewed the bottle top. “Why else?”

He crossed his arms stiffly against his chest and sighed. “You do love to incite me.”

“You know it.” I leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. I lingered for a moment, drawn in by his scent: angel and Nectar, sweat and spice.

And when I finally did step away, his hand caught my wrist. Our gazes locked. The air crackled, thick with magic and all the unspoken feelings between us. Still holding to my wrist, Nero lifted his other hand, stroking his fingertips down my arm.

“I love you, Leda.” His gaze burned into me, intense and unblinking. “I just wanted you to know. No matter what happens, I will always love you.” He said it like a dying man speaking his last words.

“Hey, don’t talk like that.” I reached up to capture his hand, pressing it to my chest, right over my heart. “Everything is going to be all right. I promise. Nero Windstriker and Leda Pandora never fail. As long as we stick together, we can defeat anything the universe throws at us, whether it’s the Guardians…or some power-hungry god with an immortal artifact.”

“I hope you’re right.”

“Of course I am. Everything will work out. I will make sure of it. And you know how stubborn I am.”

He snorted. “Yes. I do.”

“Then stop worrying. We have to get ready.” I pulled him toward the door. “Unless you’re too tired for dinner? I can always order in.”

“No,” he said as we left the gym. “I’ve already had to cancel our last six date nights. I am not canceling this one.”

Damiel was waiting for us inside our suite.

“You know, most people who go on visit actually wait to be let in,” I told him, kicking off my sports shoes.

“I am not most people.” Damiel looked amused.

When I sighed, Nero said, “You could always add him to your security system’s black list.”

“Yeah, but then who would babysit Sierra on date night?” I countered.
