“Leda?” Damiel asked me.

“Nero and I just returned from a world where some mysterious god armed the people with weapons that can kill a god,” I said. “They used them to attack Faris’s soldiers. Then they defaced his temple and declared themselves free of him. The god’s name is Solarian. Ever heard of him?”

“No.” Damiel looked at Cadence.

“Neither have I,” she replied. “But I’ll ask my father.”

“And I can ask Nyx when I see her,” Nero added.

“Good idea,” I told him. “Nyx trained with the gods. She’s got to know a bunch of them.”

Nero kissed me, then rose from the sofa. “I’ll do it the next time I see her. Given how intent Faris is on keeping this whole thing under wraps, it must be very dangerous. I don’t want to ask Nyx about it in a text message.” He moved toward his parents, but stopped to turn around and give me a worried look.

“I’ll be fine,” I assured him, waving him off. “Go with your parents to find the artifact. I think I can handle one sleeping toddler while you’re gone.”

“It’s not you I’m worried about,” he replied. “It’s your father.”

“Faris is not going to kill me in my sleep because I asked about the crazy god who’s annoying him.”

“I’d feel better if you posted a few soldiers here?”

“Here? In the suite?”

“Yes.”

“I guess I could give Alec Morrows a call.”

“No, not Morrows,” Nero replied, frowning.

“He’s my head of security,” I reminded him.

Nero shook his head. “I don’t like the way he looks at you.”

“And how is that?”

“Like you aren’t wearing any clothes.”

I snorted. “Alec looks at every woman like that.”

Nero stiffened. “Was that supposed to make me feel better, Pandora?”

“Ok,” I chuckled, rising to my feet. I crossed the room to him. “I’ll call Claudia and…well, I’ll think of some other female soldiers.” I frowned.

“What’s wrong?” Nero asked me.

“I’m just realizing that most of my friends have left. Ivy and Drake are at Storm Castle. And Basanti and Leila too. Jace is in New Orleans.”

“Change is an inevitable part of life,” Cadence said quietly, even wistfully.

“But we always make it work,” Damiel added with a smile.

“I’ll be back before tomorrow’s big event,” Nero told me. “I promise.” He gave me a final kiss, then disappeared with his parents.

“Well, I guess this is the perfect time for a snack,” I said to myself, heading for the refrigerator. I frowned when I found nothing but a carrot and half a bottle of orange juice inside. “Damiel,” I grumbled, grabbing the juice bottle. He always cleared out my fridge.

My phone rang.

“Hey, Tessa,” I answered, nudging the refrigerator door shut with my hip. “What’s up?”
