If you hang around long enough, I’ll tell you.

Holy hell, did I want to hang around long enough.

“We’re landing early in Colorado Springs.” The announcement came, breaking into my thought of wanting to hang around forever.

“Shit,” I breathed. “That means another flight.”

“That means a drive if you want it to mean a drive,” Keene said quietly.

I’d never wanted it to mean a drive more in my life. “You want to split a rental car?”

He scoffed. “After that? Of fucking course I do.”

CHAPTER 6

Roses are red, I’m going to bed.

KEENE

We touched down at the airport, and every single person I made eye contact with looked wary as fuck.

My adrenaline was still pumping, and the woman at my side was clinging so tightly that it was hard to get our shit out of the overhead bin.

I didn’t complain, though.

I needed her just as close as she needed me in that moment.

I’d spent the last forty fucking minutes thinking that I was going to die right along with her, and a few things had shifted in my mindset in that time.

One, I wanted to see my sisters and my nieces and nephews one more time before I died.

Two, I wanted kids.

Three, I wanted a wife.

Four, I wanted this world to be a better place, and that meant that despite wanting all of those previous things, I still wanted to accomplish my original goal.

But in the twenty minutes—not fucking ten like the pilot had said—of turbulence, and bad turbulence at that, I’d realized that sticking it to my father would be the final fuck you to his memory.

With the woman still practically wrapped around me on one side, and the other holding not only my backpack but her carry-on, we made our way off the plane.

“For those of you who want to drive from here, there’s a rental car station downstairs,” I heard as I walked out. “You can pick your baggage up in baggage claim. If you do want to fly, the next flight to Nebraska is tomorrow night at nine pm.”

If driving didn’t already sound great, it would’ve sounded perfect after that.

There was no way I was going to spend any more time in the airport if I didn’t have to. And after a quick glance at the distance from Colorado Springs to Nebraska, six hours sounded definitely doable.

The woman plastered into my side was still shaking, and I had to pull her closer into my arms to bypass all the people who were crowded around.

A few were even mad that they had landed.

I nearly laughed as I walked past.

They weren’t concerned for the other people who’d fallen and likely broken bones in that freak twenty minutes?

Jesus Christ, the nerve of some people.
