By the time I pulled away, she was breathless, but her eyes were so full of trust and affection I knew my mom was right. This was living. This was loving. My life had new meaning now that I'd found someone to share it with.

"The designer’s a friend of a friend," I said finally, knowing she’d never let it go.

"And this?" she asked, gesturing towards the personalized canvas.

"That was nothing," I said, slipping the bracelet from the box in her hand.

She shook her head, reluctantly letting me keep my secrets. Which I appreciated. After all, it wasn’t interesting that I went to high school with the woman charged with curating this section of the museum. What was interesting was the fact that I had a new girlfriend, and I wanted the whole world to know it.

Maddy held out her forearm, suppressing a giggle as I fumbled with the delicate clasp. "I love it," she said, giving her wrist a shake.

Watching her smile at her new bling made me feel charged with adrenaline, adrenaline that surged when she looked up at me. I rubbed a thumb across her cheek, feeling for a moment like she and I were the center of the universe.

"Does this mean the official wooing is over?" she asked, tilting her head against my hand.

"Of course not," I said. "I'm only getting started."
