“Of course.” Should I insist she let me help her move? “Did James give you the address?”

“He did, yeah. You’re sure you don’t mind?”

“He’d do it for my sister,” I said, terrified of blurting out the wrong thing.

“Thanks, Quinn. I owe you one.”

“I like my eggs scrambled and my coffee with two sugars.”

“Noted,” she said without laughing. “See you Saturday.”

I exhaled the breath I was holding as soon as she hung up. Then I packed my briefcase, raced home, and spent the rest of the day moving all James’s shit into my room and all my stuff across the hall into his, so Maddy would have the bigger closet, the nicer view, and the room closer to the bathroom.

I’m not entirely sure why I did it. Maybe it was nervous energy.

Or maybe I just liked the idea of her sleeping in my room.
