He froze and spoke over the shoulder of his red t-shirt. “Oh. I figured she was staying in James’s—”

“She is,” I said, desperate to regain control over the situation. “James and I swapped recently. I lost a bet. It’s a long story. Just get my fucking chair already.”

“What was the bet?” Pete asked, grabbing the deck of cards and assuming shuffling duties. “That you couldn’t stop being an asshole for twenty-four hours?”

“As if he’d take that bet!” Tanner shouted through the wall before wheeling my desk chair into the room.

I couldn’t even look at Maddy. It offended me how unbothered she seemed at the thought of slowly undressing in front of these dweebs.

“You girls ready to get naked, or what?” she asked, leaning back in her chair.

My eyes drifted her way as Pete dealt the cards. “You really don’t have to play.”

“You really don’t have to keep saying that,” she said, sliding her cards towards her and dropping her eyes.

I studied her expression and wondered if she even knew how to play, but her pupils gave nothing away. James liked Texas hold ’em enough that I figured she knew the basics, but I was dreading the moment she’d have to take off her shirt. Not that I didn’t want to see the smooth mounds of her breasts, because I did. I just didn’t want it to happen in front of my friends like this. If I was ever going to see Maddy Mason’s tits, I wanted it to be because I unwrapped her slowly in a situation where she felt like she was winning the whole time. I didn’t want to take part in tricking her, in making her feel like a loser. Especially after the week she’d had.

“I can’t wait to find out which one of you pansies is the one that wears tighty whities,” she said, her eyes lingering on each of us.

“I rarely wear underwear,” Tanner admitted casually.

My chest constricted. I’d been so worried about what Maddy might reveal that the thought of my friends getting their dicks out hadn’t even occurred to me yet.

“I am today,” he said. “So don’t y’all get too excited.”

I scoffed. Excitement was the last thing I was feeling, and the thought of Tanner’s leftie lying across my desk chair wasn’t helping things. But I was determined to put that thought out of my mind, pull myself together, and come up with a new game plan. After all, there was nothing I wouldn’t do to make sure Maddy kept their money—and her dignity—intact.
