ChapterTwenty-Seven

Eden

The morning sunlight pulled me from bed, and I stretched my entire body out across the queen-size mattress that had cradled my body all night.

The towel that had once been wrapped around my body sat bunched up at the foot of the bed, and as I rolled over onto my stomach I tried to drift back off into a peaceful slumber. Maybe if I didn’t surface, Dominik would forget all about me for that day in favor of work. Maybe if I kept to myself, he’d forget all about the fact that we had one more evening in paradise where my body was his wonderland to tease and please as he saw fit.

But, as I laid there with my body slowly becoming aware of its surroundings, the sloshing of the lazy waves against the cabana stilts pulled me from my reverie.

A morning swim never hurt anyone.

I dragged my ass out of bed and managed to get my teeth brushed. I pulled my tangled, knotted hair into a messy bun at the crown of my head, then settled on a bikini I had brought with me for the ride. The shimmering royal blue and silver accents on the white fabric lent itself to a nautical theme that fit our destination exactly. And as I slipped out of the bedroom, I made a break for the balcony.

Before jumping straight into the water without a second thought.

“Wee hoo!” I exclaimed.

The water seemed to open up, accepting the whole of my body as I sank toward the sandy floor. The cool essence enveloped me, catching my plummeting body before I started kicking my legs. I swam back up to the surface, coming up for a lungful of air before I managed to wipe the salted water away from my eyes. The sun had already raised itself into the sky, casting a lovely warm hue over the crystal waters that had begun undulating in my presence.

“I could get used to this,” I whispered.

I tilted onto my back and let the water float me along, my body bobbing endlessly with the waves as they wafted beneath me. Fish continued to flutter against my skin, and as I held my breath, I felt something brushing against my toes. I smiled at the thought. Being one with nature had always intrigued me. I damn near felt like the Snow White of the ocean with all these sea creatures coming up and poking around at the blubbery expanse of my body as it floated along the surface.

And as I gazed up at the bright blue sky, I wondered what it would be like to spend the rest of my days living in a place like that.

The world would never see me again.

Outside of the contract that gave my body over to some man for his nefarious pleasures, I knew I could easily get used to jetting off like that all the time. Having privacy every weekend. Or even every other weekend. Walking away from the world and its stressors so I could simply… exist. If anything, these trips had already shown me the kind of life I wanted to work toward. The kind of peace I wanted to reach for in my latter years. If anything, it showed me that the back-half of my life needed to be spent somewhere other than behind a desk fielding drug charges and battling trafficking kingpins in court.

“Maybe once I can get my student loans paid off,” I murmured to myself.

“Cannonbaaaaaall!”

I scrambled to get away from his cawing voice, but the second I heard that splash, the waves from his body enveloped me. Back under I went, my arms flailing and legs kicking to try and get back to the peaceful surface that had cradled me within its arms.

But the second I emerged back to the surface, another wave of splashing water battered me in the face.

“Morning!” Dominik exclaimed.

I glared at him through the tendrils of my hair that dripped into my face. “Are you fucking kidding me right now?”

He chuckled as he swam around. “Not a fan of cannonballs?”

I splashed him, but he quickly ducked beneath the water. I watched as he swam toward me, and I did my best to swim back to the balcony. My arms pulled me through the water. My legs kicked as quickly as they could go. But the instant I felt his strong hands wrap around my ankles, I cried out.

“Dominik Drake, don’t you fucking dar—AH!”

As he pulled me beneath the surface, my moment of tranquility had disappeared. I kicked my leg, feeling it connect with something that gave effortlessly beneath my heel. I clawed my way to the surface through the water. I didn’t stop moving until I got to the side ladder that helped me to hoist myself back onto the glass-bottom balcony.

And as I stood to my feet, with water dripping all around me, I glared down at Dominik as he came up gasping for air.

“Are you fucking insane?” he asked breathlessly.

I snarled at him. “You can have my body and you can have my pussy as per our agreement. But you don’t get access to my quiet time. You don’t get to ruin the little bit of peace I have left in my life just because you feel entitled to it. That wasn’t in our agreement, so therefore, you don’t get it. Got it?”

“You really need to learn to lighten up, babe.”

I flipped him the bird before I turned my back to him. “I hope a shark swallows you whole!”
