ChapterThirty-Four

Dominik

“Oh, no you don’t.”

The second I saw her knees buckle, my arms went out. I crouched down and slid my arms beneath her, catching her body as she completely gave way. Tears slid effortlessly down her rosy-red cheeks, scarring a path directly to her jawline. And as the weight of her body fell against my arms, I scooped her into my embrace.

Before settling her into my office chair.

“Eden, can you hear me?” I asked.

She stared down at me, but I knew she couldn’t see me.

“Jackson. Water,” I said.

“Eden!” Em exclaimed.

I stood and whipped around, stopping her in her tracks. “Let me get her focused first. Jackson!?”

“Let me see my daughter,” Mr. Rochere growled.

I pointed at him. “You’ve done enough.”

“Catch!” Jackson yelled.

The small bottle of water soared through the air, tumbling head over heels. I caught it between my palms and crouched back down, pivoting around in a circle like some sort of fucking ballerina. My attention was completely trained onto Eden. Onto the woman that had tried her best to keep her cool while figuring out what in the hell was hanging over her family’s head. I cracked it open and held it up to her lips. At first, she didn’t move. She simply stared down into my face while simultaneously looking right through me with her unfocused eyes.

And as her sister hovered over my head, I gripped Eden’s chin. “Come on, sweet girl. Take a sip for me.”

I held the bottle to her lips for a second time, and that seemed to shock her back to life. Her eyes danced between my own as her lips parted just enough to take a few pulls from the bottle. I tilted it slowly, trying not to make a mess as her throat swallowed long pulls of the cold liquid down.

“Come here,” Jackson said softly, “let’s give them some space.”

“Eden, are you okay? Is she going to be okay?” Em asked.

Eden cleared her throat. “Thanks.”

I placed the bottle in her hand and patted her forearm. “I want you to finish that before you stand again.”

With a nod of her head, I stood to my feet. I perched myself beside her, ready and waiting for whatever assault was about to take place. I never thought I’d meet another man in my life who had an ego as big as mine, but as I stared her father down with a need for his blood wafting beneath my nostrils, I realized something.

I was gazing into the face of the only man on the planet with an ego bigger than my own.

“Mr. Rochere?”

His gaze snapped in my direction. “What?”

I settled my hand on Eden’s shoulder. “I’m going to give you one more shot to tell me what in the world WITSEC has to do with the Beauregard Family.”

He scoffed. “And why the fuck would you want to know that?”

And that’s when Em finally dropped the last pieces into place. “Because Lila Beauregard is accusing one of my staff members of sexually accosting her at a banquet of Dominik’s that I catered. That’s how all of this started. We’ve figured out that Lila cried wolf, and in trying to figure out why all of this has apparently been uncovered.”

I grinned. “Smart girl.”

Eden finally spoke. “She’s always been bright.”

I squeezed her shoulder. “So, you either talk, or I’ll call Thaddius myself and get him in this room with us and maybe we can all talk together.”
