“Um, no. We recently broke up.”

“That’s too bad,” he said before sitting down across from her. “Man, I know how difficult break-ups can be.”

“That’s okay,” she said. “It’s for the best, actually.”

“Look, we’ve only spoken a handful of times, but what about getting a drink later on tonight?”

I jumped off the picnic table. “Actually, we’ll probably be hitting the books pretty late tonight. I got midterms coming up, so, you know.”

Kevin didn’t look away from Isabella as he stood up to leave. “Gotcha. Well, you two have fun studying. And don’t be a stranger, Isabella.”

We both watched Kevin jog off into the distance, checking out every girl who crossed his path. Knowing that I used to be like him was making me sick to my stomach, the way he practically threw himself at every woman who gave him the time of day. Even if it was just to say, hi. Maybe it was time to officially retire my Bedroom King reputation, even if it meant adding one more thing to my already hectic schedule.

The second Kevin was out of earshot, I leaned across the table to Isabella.

“I’ve been meaning to tell you this, but I’d love to go to the charity event with you.”
