“The party and using Rondeau were all my idea, and look how well it’s turning out. Joliet and Erik have been thrown through every loop possible and the longer this goes on, the more they’ll spiral. I’m like a little revenge cupid.” She wiggled her brows, encouraging Tully to smother her in compliments and thank for her role in this scandal.

“You’re getting ahead of yourself. We haven’t started yet.”

“Think again, my dear friend.” Stephanie’s gaze flickered off of Tully’s shoulder and out the windshield to the school parking lot. They’d been sitting there for ten minutes since it was the best place to hide out and discuss such sensitive information during lunch hour. Tully turned and followed her eyes to the group of girls wearing cheer uniforms and glaring right back at her. Amazingly, she didn’t feel their stares before. Right in the middle, Joliet stood with her arms crossed, hair high on her head, and boring into Tully’s very soul with light blue, sinister eyes. “It looks like you guys have some rumors to catch up to.”

Nathan was 90% sure he scored no higher than 50% on that dumb quiz.

That alone validated his choice.

A fake relationship wasn’t a big deal. It was probably much easier than real dating. Not only did he not have to look for a tutor now, but he didn’t have worry about keeping Tulsa or anyone else entertained. His attention could remain 100% on fixing this academic mess he’d created for himself.

At least, he thought so.

They didn’t discuss much about what they were going to do because the first bell rang and they both had to scurry away to separate classes. He’d tried to look for her during lunch, but he couldn’t find her.

Honest to God, he was a little worried she’d decided to bail entirely and avoid him forever. Then he’d really be in a tight spot.

For all he knew, while he’d been feeling more and more reassured about this scheme, she could have transferred out of school just to get away from him.

But why should she be the one to run away? She’d begged him for his help, and she’d been the one to initiate the kiss at the party.

Almost every interaction between them was entirely Tulsa’s doing. From the sounds of it, she had just as much to gain and lose from this as he did.

Maybe it would be best to just call her and discuss this as soon as he got home.

He rounded the corner towards his locker and slid to a stop.

Two freshmen girls who had been laughing behind him and not paying attention smacked into his back and made him stumble forward. He managed to catch his books before they fell from his hands and hit the ground, but he’d already caught her eye.

Tulsa, leaning back against his locker, looked up at the commotion. She straightened and faced her whole body toward him.

So maybe she wasn’t avoiding him.

He recollected himself and walked towards her.

Her shoulders were held back, mimicking confidence, but her eyes narrowed enough for him to tell that she was uncertain of what to expect when he got to her.

The two freshmen started whispering.

“Isn’t that his girlfriend?”

“She looks like she wants to bite his head off.”

Nathan took a look around. They weren’t the only ones watching him head to her or noting that unpleasant look on her face. More than half the people in the hallway were invested in this interaction.

And the happy couple wasn’t putting on a convincing display.

Nathan smiled at her, raised his hand, and waved.

Tulsa’s mouth dropped slightly.

Through the internal cringe he felt at the unnatural interaction, he reminded himself it was all for a reason. If he wanted to revive those grades, he needed to put on a compelling show.

Unfortunately, Tulsa wasn’t ready to play along more fully, frowning the entire time he approached. She stepped aside so he could open his locker. He fiddled around with the lock and opened the door, using it as a small buffer from some of the peanut gallery.
