The man slipped two paper tickets out to them, and Nathan thanked him. “Are you busy tonight?”

“No.”

“Then it’s a date,” he spun around, holding the tickets up, and fanned out so she could see them. Too late to back out now. Plus, it was worth it to see the dumbfounded jut of her mouth. “A movie followed by studying is said to be very romantic.”

Tully ran a hand over her face, glanced over to his friends, studied the tickets once more, and then let out a long, dramatic sigh. Nathan had to hold back his snicker.

“Fine. But we’re studyingrightafter. You have a quiz on Monday so you’re not getting out of this.”

“Of course not. I’d never pass on the chance to study with you.”

At that, she sniffed and turned to walk towards the theater without waiting for him.

Nathan grinned and caught up with her.

***

“Here.” Nathan held out the giant tub of popcorn out. Tully blinked up at him, her eyes wide as she studied him balancing two sodas and several candies in his other hand. She jumped up from her chair, catching a few of the things before they fell.

He’d admittedly gone overboard buying a few treats while she went to find some seats. And since he hadn’t asked what her favorite type of candy was, he had grabbed a few options so she’d like at least something.

“What’s all this?” She stared at the treats in her hands.

“You can’t watch a movie without popcorn,” he said as she helped him put the drinks in the cup holders so he could sit down. “Coke, popcorn, and I also got some Nerds, Milk Duds, Mike and Ike’s, and Reese’s Pieces. I’m not sure what kind of candy you like.”

She perked at the sight of the peanut butter treat, and picked it out before setting the others on her lap as she settled back down. “These are my favorite.”

There was a swell of satisfaction that of all the candies to choose from, he happened to grab the one that was her favorite. He’d keep that in mind for the future.

They settled into their seats, now set with everything you could possibly want in a movie theater, and focused on the screen playing a trailer for some new flick with Michael J. Fox.

“What are we watching anyway?” she leaned in to whisper. Nathan leaned in as well, meeting her halfway.

“Police Academy.”

She nodded, then popped several Reese’s Piece into her mouth and sipped on some Coke.

Nathan had a thing for comedy movies, so this was right up his alley.

He laughed along with the few other audience members through the story. It took him a while to realize it, but as the film progressed, he found himself glancing towards Tully.

Every time he chuckled, he glanced at her hoping she was too. Every time a character made a joke or something stupid happened, he peeked to see if she reacted.

And every time, her face was the same: still as stone. Unrelenting and unamused.

He could swear she stilled up whenever he turned her way too.

And he was a little disappointed every time.

Hereallywanted to see her smile. Why? He wasn’t quite sure. But one thing he knew for sure, he really enjoyed her smile. Even when it was fake and overly sarcastic in their act, he enjoyed seeing her face brighten and cheeks indent and eyes crinkle, even for a few seconds.

Maybe it was because she didn’t smile much, but when she did, he couldn’t get enough. Like telling a child they couldn’t have any candy, it only made him want it more.

Did she just not like movies? Was she not a fan of comedy?

Was she bored out of her mind, and thinking she’d rather be going over math problems than watching this stupid movie?

Still, he kept checking, just in case she slipped up even once.
