And the ones who’d come for us last…

My brain doesn’t even want to go back there.

“I’ll take your call,” Easely says finally. He stands, straightening his suit and holding out a hand to Giovanni.

Giovanni shakes his hand and there’s nothing left to be said. Vitalli sees us out and it isn’t until we’re in the car that we begin to speak.

“Did it go how you expected?” I ask Giovanni, peering at the road as I drive.

He scoffs, “Of course it did. I knew that Easley wouldn’t take my offer to join the family and I didn’t want him to. You heard him, he was going to kill his uncle to take his post, you think he wouldn’ttryto do the same to me?”

He’s right.

“Never invite a snake to your bed and expect them not to bite,” he says and I look over to find him looking out the window. “And Lionel Mosely is a piece of shit anyway, I’ve been waiting for someone to finally take his territory, if I can speed that up and get York out of my city so I don’t have to worry about him, then perfect.”

“And you’ve got more bodies when this whole thing finally comes to a head with Seven Quad.”

“Exactly.”

I know that we’ve already got allies in the Damones and the Iron Skulls motorcycle club, but I have no doubt that we need as many people as we can get. Because when the gunfire starts and Dox comes for us, he’ll have an army behind him.

And Giovanni wants to try to end this thing with as little bloodshed as possible on our side, something we weren’t able to achieve last time.

So, we need numbers.

“Have you made up your mind about the other thing?” I ask him, thinking about another source of allies we discussed before meeting with Easely today.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I’ll be calling New York as soon as we get home.”

Which means hell is coming to the city.

CHAPTER FOUR: MAXIMO

“Did you say the New York cousins were coming?” I ask, my head snapping up in excitement as I look at Giovanni. We’ve been in his office for the last thirty minutes, Vito, Lucia, and I, listening to Giovanni discuss his plans. To be truthful, I hadn’t been paying attention until I’d heard the words New York.

Giovanni gives a sharp nod of his head and I know he isn’t happy, but I definitely am.

The Costas in New York.

When my father decided he was going to kill his own brother after he couldn’t tame Lucia, my uncle’s sons hadn’t taken it well. Primo and Ettore left the family, moving to New York and getting their own thing started. The second they did, they’d basically cut off their ties to the family.

If my father hadn’t been so stuck doing other shit, such as beating his sons until they spat out blood, he probably would have went right after the duo, putting them down. But he’d waited too long and by the time he’d wanted to go after them, they’d had their own thing going. A new gang behind them.

And then the war with Seven Quad started.

Once father had been killed, Primo had reached out to Giovanni to make sure that there was no bad blood. Giovani hadn’t cared one way or another, but he’d confirmed he didn’t have a vendetta with the New York crew and they’d made it clear that if he ever needed their help, they’d step in, all he had to do was call.

The offer had been for taking care of Lucia, which in turn pissed my favorite cousin off. She’d made it clear she didn’t need her brothers to put up some sort of bullshit offer as if they cared about her. Because at one point, they’d been just like the rest of the old heads, thinking that Lucia needed to be put in her place. They thought their sister should have been out at teas and luncheons instead of hiding in alleyways, stalking and killing people.

It’d caused a snag in their relationship, something that had yet to be repaired, even though it was clear the brothers had a change of heart.

And I know that she still speaks to them, though it’s not often.

Even when they’d invited her to join them in New York and leave us behind, she’d declined the offer.
