She opens her mouth to reply but the waitress returns to the table with two pink drinks, so she stops talking.

“Have you decided what you’re going to order,” the waitress asks.

“Yes,” Lucia says, despite the fact that neither of us have touched our menus.

While she orders her food, quickly and efficiently, I scramble over the menu. Clearly Lucia has been here many times before.

“Bourbon bacon burger,” I tell the waitress, taking the first thing I see.

“Awesome, I’ll have that out for you guys.”

The waitress disappears.

“Maliece is only one of many ways that I get information I need,” Lucia says, picking our conversation right back up.

“And this Maliece… she knows what you do?” I ask her.

I know that when Lucia says ex side piece, she doesn’t mean girlfriend, but just someone who she slept with. From my understanding, she doesn’t do any other kind of relationship, and like her cousin, she doesn’t discriminate when it comes to what is or isn’t between her partner’s legs.

Though according to Vito she prefers women.

She nods as she takes a long sip of her drink. “Maliece knows everything.”

The confidence in which she says it throws me off guard.

“Really? That seems like something you’d want to keep a secret from most people” And yet, it seems like every damn body knows what it is that Lucia does.

How is she not in prison yet?

She chuckles, taking her straw out of her drinks and tipping it up to her lips. She downs it in seconds, meanwhile I have yet to touch mine. “Everyone doesn’t know, just those important enough to have the knowledge.” She shrugs. “And Maliece is special.”

There’s something about the way she says it… I’d almost say that her voice holds admiration.

I sit up a little straighter in my seat, taking my own sip of my drink now. It’s fruity, the flavor exploding across my tongue and if I didn’t know better, I would think it didn’t have any alcohol in it. I take another long pull before asking, “What makes Maliece so special?”

Lucia’s lips twitch. “You’d have to meet her to understand.”

“This Maliece, do you love her?”

The bright expression on her face dies a quick death and she scowls as she looks at me. “Winter, what would make you ask such a dumb question?”

My eyes widen and I gesture to her face. “You were smiling when you were talking about her and there was something in your voice.”

“Something in my voice.” Wrinkles appear on her face. “Qualcosa nella mia voce.Jesus, Winnie.”

“What?” I hold my hands up in surrender, “What’s so bad about the question.”

“You’re such a dreamer,” she says, shaking her head, relaxing. “I don’t love Maliece, at least not in the way you’re implying. She was a great lay, but she’s an even better friend, and better than that, an accomplice.”

I study her, running my tongue over my teeth as I think. “You know you’re different then your cousins.”

She sends me a look of disbelief. “Of course I am.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard them pay compliments to others or call someone their friend.”

“That’s because they’re emotionally stunted apes, but you can’t blame them, my uncle was horrible.” A dark look passes over her face. “That man was a god damned monster, may he continue to rot in hell.”

I want to ask her for more information, but our food is already being brought out. As we eat, the conversation turns to lighter things and I enjoy how comfortable I feel with Lucia. I know she’s dangerous, know she could kill me in a second if she wanted, but instead she gives me the opposite feeling, as if she’d protect me with her life if it came down to it.
