Both of us, toxic to our very core, just like our old man.

“I did not mean for Enzo to get hurt.”

“That almost sounds like an apology, Giovanni.” And my brother never apologizes.

Ever.

He shrugs his shoulders but I don’t miss the look on his face, the regent.

Thisisn’t my brother, he doesn’t rethink a decision once he’s made it.

“It is.”

“Why?”

“I don’t have the time for any hostility between us right now. We both need our heads on straight as we focus on the real enemy, not each other.”

I stare at him, folding my arms over my chest. “Then I guess we may as well not get into the discussion of our dead father.”

Because these dumb decisions my brother continues to make come from him still trying to impress the dead man.

Vincenzo Costa is the reason why my brother and I are so close and yet so far away.

My brother, and even Vito, did their best to protect me from the cruel man for so long. And yet, my brother has proved to be nothing but a chip off the old block once he did and he replicated his actions.

“No, it’s best we don’t.” His jaw tightens and he rubs it as his phone goes off. He glances at me before answering it. “Hello?” He listens to whatever the person on the other end is saying, his body growing tense. “Deal with it.” He pulls the phone away from his face.

“What?” I ask, despite myself.

“Vito and Amadeo picked up Enzo’s car.”

My first thought is that somehow damage has been caused to it from the look on Giovanni’s face, but it was still in prime condition when I saw it at the warehouse, so it must be something else.

“What happened?”

“Our dealer’s body was in the trunk of it.”

Fuck.

“Seven Quad is sending out a message that anyone who fucks with us is going to end up with their head being cut off,” I say dryly.

Giovanni jerks his head in a nod. “Did Enzo say anything about what they said to him?”

“No.” Hell, I hadn’t even gotten him to confirm that it was Seven Quad. The facts added up too well for it not to be them.

“Okay.” He shoves his phone into his pocket. “I’m going to have to get in touch with all our contacts, let them know to have their heads on a swivel. Plus, I’m going to have to find new guns now.” I almost tell him we have enough already even with the deal with our dealer going bad. But for once, I don’t want to talk about guns or fighting.

Instead, I dryly ask. “Will there be blowback from the dead dealer’s crew.”

He pauses. “Possibly.”

Of course.

I’ve got to hand it to that damn Maddox, he’s playing chess while my brother is playing checkers. Dealing blow after blow without getting his fingers dirty.

Problems for Giovanni to deal with.

My eyes move to the door of the infirmary but it's almost like someone glued my feet to the floor as I’m unable to move.
