“Oh god! You’ve seen it, haven’t you?” Her tone is high-pitched, demanding answers.

“I might have,” I say while studying the wall by the mirror.

She squeals. “Details!”

My shoulders lift and fall in a small shrug. “He’s just really ripped.” I look back at her with narrowed eyes. “He probably gained all that muscle from prison.”

She waves a hand in front of the camera. “Who the hell cares where he got them? Could you imagine what it’d be like having sex with all that muscle?”

I pinch the bridge of my nose and grumble under my breath for a second. “I try not to imagine such things.”

“Only because it’ll make you all hot and bothered. You should try to lay on some moves.”

Dropping my hand back to my side, I say, “He’s not my type, Tori.”

A disgusted noise comes from the back of her throat. “I’ve seen your type. It’s pathetic.”

I frown. “My choices in men are not pathetic.”

“They’re safe, Tegan. Boring. So yes, a little pathetic. I thought you came out here to live a little? What better way to do it than with Cole?”

“You mean an ex-con?”

“It’s better than the beekeeper you dated. Or the charity owner. Or the pet rescuer.”

“All sensible men who didnotgo to prison for god knows what.”

She moves the phone closer to her face. “Just think of the thrill, Tegan.”

“Why don’t you fuck him then?” I ask, exasperated.

She shrugs a little. “He seems like the type that would take a lot just to get to your front door. But you already have him in your house. When was the last time you got laid?”

A long, long time ago.“Does it matter?”

“As your best friend, yes, it matters.” She moves so that she’s lying down on her bed. “You know what? You just gave me a mission.”

“Oh god,” I mumble.

“I’m going to get you laid.”

Knowing I can’t stop her now because, once she has an idea, she sticks with it, I say, “Sure, Tor. You do that.”

She says something in response, but I don’t listen. All I hear is the floorboards creaking in my bedroom. Without a second thought, I glance into my bedroom, solely distracted by Tori’s mission.

It’s an old house. Things are going to creak. But what stops me is the rose petal now on my pillowcase.

“Tegan?” Tori calls. “Are you listening?”

“Hmm?” I ask as I head into my bedroom. I pick up the rose petal with a frown. “Not really.”

“What are you looking at? Your eyebrows are all scrunched up.”

I cock my head to the side and then glance around my bedroom. “A rose petal.”

“Where the hell did that come from?”

Rubbing the petal between my fingers, I say, “I have no idea, but tonight is full of strange things.”
