“Yeah?”

“Stay away from Jax. He won't survive you.”

She hangs up without saying goodbye, but she’s laughing. Jax has had the biggest crush on her for so long. Macy has always entertained it because she likes guys flirting with her. I'mworried that one day after going at it with Cord, she’s going to seek comfort in my brother’s arms and I don’t want that.

I love Macy and she’s an amazing friend, but she’s not the type of woman Jax needs. He needs someone who’s going to be an anchor. Someone he can count on to be constant and even tempered all the time. That person isn't Macy.

Actually, she’s the type of person Cody should date. She’d pull him out of his shell a little more and get him to have some fun. He’s always just gone with the flow and that’s what Macy needs… but I still want her to stay away from my brothers.

After packing a little bit more, I call it a night and climb into bed. I fall asleep quickly as exhaustion takes over. It’s going to be a long few days ahead of me. I just want to be settled into life on Mulberry Lane and get used to my new job. Maybe then I’ll be able to relax.

Chapter 10

Wyatt

“I hear I missed seeing the new physical therapist.” Stubbs pushes the bar into the air before slowly lowering it to his chest again. “I hear she’s hot too,” he grunts out as he struggles with the weight.

“Oh, is she?” I slowly make my way over to Stubbs and place my hand on the bar like I'm willing to help him if he needs it.

“Oh, shit,” Cord murmurs under his breath. He knows exactly what’s going to happen if Stubbs keeps running his mouth.

“Yeah. Everyone’s saying she’s a tiny little thing, but has curves in all the right places.” He wiggles his brows.

I push the bar down into his chest and smirk when he starts struggling to breathe. This fucker needs to be put in his place. He always talks about women like they’re just objects and I hate it. I was raised to respect women and I make sure I treat them just like I would want someone to treat my sisters.

“You’re going to stay away from her and you’re going to make sure you never speak about her like that again. Do you understand?” I lean in close to make sure he’s really hearing me.

Stubbs’ eyes widen and he nods his head quickly. I pick the bar off of his chest and place it on the rack before patting his shoulder. He’s not going to be a problem. He’s young and doesn’t know better, but he’ll learn quickly if he’s smart.

“Good, kid. Now, stay away from my fucking girl. Charlie’s mine and if I see any of you sniffing around her, I’ll fucking cut off your balls and use them in practice. Are we clear?”

“Crystal,” he grunts as he sits up and rubs at his chest.

“If anyone else wants to mouth off about Charlie, you’re going to answer to me. I won't fucking put up with it,” I growl, spinning in a circle to meet every asshole’s gaze. “Remember who your captain is and the sway I have over who plays and who is benched.”

“But are Macy and Cici off limits?” Smithy slowly raises his hand, mischief in his eyes. He’s doing this just to screw with Cord and it’s going to work.

“What the fuck?” Cord roars. “Of course they are!”

“I mean I can understand you wanting Cici off limits. She’s your sister and twin, but how long ago did you and Macy break up? She said it’s been years. I think there’s a time limit on thebros before hoes.I’m pretty sure it’s expired by now.” Smithy shrugs his shoulders.

He’s trying to take the focus off of me and I appreciate that. It’s not often I lose my shit in front of my team, and that’s why I'm the team captain. I lead the team on and off of the field. I represent the team because I'm level headed and do well with reporters and being in the public eye. You’ll rarely see Cord talk to anyone, especially by himself, because you can never guess what’s going to come out of his mouth. He’s a PR nightmare. I’ve always been the safe option. The one player you can count on to keep their chin held high and their nose clean.

Most major league baseball teams don’t have captains, but Owen insisted on having one once he took over the team. He says it’s easier to communicate things with one person and then I'm responsible to relay information to the entire team. I listen to their concerns and take them back to Owen. I’m practically a manager of the team. A middle man between the players and the owner.

Owen’s also more hands-on than most team owners. He wants to know what’s going on and he’s going to deal with things before they can go wrong. He’s running it like a business, rather than a team, and it’s paying off. Our players are happier and treated better than any other team out there. I'm lucky to have a place with the Pit Bulls and I know it.

“Stay away from Macy if you’d like to keep all of your teeth,” Cord grinds out through a clenched jaw. His hands are fisted at his sides and I know he’s seconds away from throwing a punch.

“Cord, let’s go,” I bark, motioning for him to follow me. We both need to cool off before we do something we’re going to regret. Or something that will get us benched when the season officially starts.

That’s just what I need.

I fold an arm behind my head as I wait for her to answer my call. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she ignores it. Charlie’s stubborn enough that if she doesn’t want to talk to me, she won't. But at the end of the day, she has a massive heart and even if she doesn’t want to admit it, she still loves me.

“Hey,” she says softly. I can barely make out her face on the video because the lights are off, or maybe she has the camera covered again.

“Hey. Why are you covering your camera?”
