“What the fuck was that!” Wheeler roars as he climbs to his feet again. He gets right in Stubbs’ face, pressing his chest against him.

Wheeler has a good six inches on Stubbs’ five-foot eight-inch stature. As well as a solid twenty pounds of muscle on him. But Stubbs is a cocky asshole and he doesn’t back down.

“Stop it!” Danny hollers from the dugout. “If you pull that shit again, Stubbs, you’re being benched for the first week of the season. I won't tolerate this shit. Wheeler, back the fuck down!”

Wheeler takes a step back and holds his hands up in the air, but he doesn’t take his eyes off of Stubbs. He’s unpredictable and he isn't a team player at all.

Covey is next to bat. He wiggles his ass in my face, making me chuckle. I’ve seen him practically twerk in front of other catchers,so I guess I should consider myself lucky to be spared that traumatic experience. He’s on base with the first ball and gives Wheeler a fist bump as soon as he touches the square rubber.

Covey’s such a nice guy. He’s always kind to whatever team we’re playing and I swear the man can make friends with anyone. You can't help but love him.

“Are you ready for this, Everson? I'm going to impress our girl.” Smithy waves behind us at Charlie before lifting his bat to his shoulder.

“I thought we talked about this, she’s my girl.”

“I'm not giving up yet.” He grins and swings as hard and as fast as he can at the ball. It sails into the outfield and I know Stubb’s is going to try to come home.

I stand to my full height and get ready to catch the ball. We all know what is going to happen. Stubbs’ loves stealing bases. He likes to play dirty and he’ll stop at nothing to win.

He’s halfway between third and home when the ball is released from one of the outfielder’s hand and soars in my direction.

I make sure to keep my foot on home plate and focus on catching the ball. Right before it’s in my glove, agony rips through my left knee as it gives away and I collapse to the ground.

“Wyatt!” Charlie screams from somewhere above me, but I'm too overwhelmed by the pain to know where she is.

I squeeze my eyes shut and try to hold my knee in a position it doesn’t hurt, but this is so painful.

“Wyatt, look at me,” Charlie’s voice is soft as she tugs off my catcher’s mask and stares at me. “Where does it hurt?”

“My left knee. I think it’s on the inside of my knee, but it really fucking hurts.”

Charlie tugs her phone out of her pocket and lifts it to her ear. Owen’s already in Stubbs’ face screaming and yelling at him. Danny’s on his other side, basically mirroring his position. He’s in trouble. He might’ve just ruined his chance at playing for the entire season.

“Jesse, I need you to come to the stadium right now. Stubbs just injured Wyatt and I’m fairly certain it’s his medial collateral ligament… I haven’t gotten him off the ground yet… No, I’m not sure if it’s a full tear… How about you just get your ass down here and figure it out yourself?” She hangs up and tosses her phone on the ground with a shake of her head. “Your uncle is an idiot.”

“What’s going on?” Owen crouches down next to us.

“I think he might’ve torn a ligament in his knee.” Charlie straightens my knee out so she can look at it.

“Is that bad?” Owen winces.

“Only if you want him to be able to walk or use his knee for things like squatting.” She rolls her eyes.

“Whoa there, princess. I didn’t do it. If you want a punching bag to take your anger out on, use Stubbs’ face.” Owen holds up hishands in defense.

“Help me get Wyatt to his feet.” Charlie glances up to find most of the team surrounding us.

Cord and Leo each slip a hand under one of my armpits and lift me to my feet. They help me get balanced, and I put my arms around their shoulders. I try to take a step on my knee, but it almost gives out immediately.

“Don’t walk on it. It’s not going to be stable if you tore your medial collateral ligament. You’ll end up falling and injuring your knee even more. Cord and Leo, help him into the physical therapy room and get him on a table. Jesse better be here soon.”

“Stubbs, get in my fucking office and don’t even think about moving a muscle until I tell you to,” Danny roars and scrubs a rough hand down his face.

The season hasn’t even started yet and it might already be over for me. If I lose baseball, what will I do then?

“Well, she was semi right, but also semi wrong. You’d make a mediocre orthopedic doctor at best.” Jesse flashes Charlie an apologetic smile.

“Oh, shut up and tell us what’s going on.” Her hands are planted on her hips and she’s giving him the best mom glare she can muster. I think she spends too much time with Addi and Mom.
