And like the gentleman I’ve always known Curtis to be, he opens the door for me, and in a possessive move, one I hope Dom sees, Curtis places his hand on the small of my back, escorting me to a booth in the back of the bar.

This isn’t what I wanted, and using Curtis to make Dom jealous had been the last thing I’d anticipated when I agreed to this date.

“Hey, you,” he says, his face close to mine. “Just for the record, I’m not mad, but are we trying to make him jealous, or is he an asshole?”

I let out a tight chuckle, and my cheeks heat with embarrassment. “Fuck, Curtis, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know he’d be here.”

“Of course you didn’t. I was the one that suggested this place, but I gather there’s history with you two?”

I don’t search the bar for Dom. Nor do I have to when Curtis tosses his head back with a large guffaw. “He could kill me with one look. So, back to my question, is he someone youdo or don’twant something with?”

“Shooting straight with me. I should expect that with a lawyer, right?” I tease, and for show, he dances his hand up my arm. “To answer your question. I don’t know. He’s not an ex-boyfriend that I’m hiding from, if that’s what you’reasking. We’ve had a couple nights together, and they haven’t materialized into anything substantial, and he’s never called me back,” I explain, looking through my bangs that hang in my face.

Dom is seated on the other side of the bar, but his legs are spread to discourage company, and he’s not trying to hide that he’s watching every move I make.

“Let me ask you this,” Curtis whispers in my ear. “Are you interested in him still or is it over? Because I’m game either way. We can leave here and have a great night, just you and me. Dinner, maybe a movie, and I’d kiss you goodnight like I always have wanted, or we can show him what an asshole he’s been, and he’ll think twice before letting you go again.”

Are men like Curtis for real?

“Either way, I’m cool. I won’t lie, my first suggestion is my favorite, but if you’re into him, I don’t want to be used.”

“I’m really sorry, Curtis. I thought I was ready to try to forget him, but…”

For Dom’s benefit, Curtis brushes a piece of my hair off my shoulder and kisses my neck as he begins to speak. “It’s fine, Sandra. It really is. And I hope this is okay with you, all the touching, because fuck…if you were mine, I’d not put up with it.”

He stops and moves his line of sight to Dom and back at me, tipping my head to his.

“I feel like such a Jezebel...”

“This is my idea, remember? And If I can show the man the error of his ways, then so be it. But let me order us some beers. Might as well drink during the show, right?”

Why did I go and catch feelings for Dom, when Curtis is a decent guy? “Hey, Curtis?” I say before he slips out from the seat. “Why didn’t you ever ask me out in the past?”

“Chalk it up to bad timing. Work took priority, and I guess I waited too long.” He places a kiss on my forehead, and Ican’t help but grin because he’sreallyinto this show we’re performing.

“Too bad they don’t have popcorn for the display we’re putting on,” I tease, and he leans down and takes my chin again.

“Just promise me one thing, Sandra?”

“Okay?”

“If that asshole is stupid again and lets you go, will you allow me to take you out on a real date?”

Fuck, my stupid heart and fucking Dominic Torano! “Yes, I will. And thanks for being so cool about this.”

There’s a line to order drinks, and soon Curtis gets swallowed by the crowd of people. I search my phone, wondering if Dom will text me. But as I look up from scrolling through everything, with no messages, he appears in front of me.

“Fuck, Dom. Are you a ninja or something?”

He doesn’t answer but sits in front of me, with an expression I can’t read.

“Are you going to sit there and stare, or are you going to speak? If you have something to say, you may want to spit it out before my date gets back.”

“What are you doing, Rosso?”

I bite my lip, watching him, all while rolling my eyes. “The better question, Dom, is what the fuck are you doing? I texted you after another night together, and you never answered me. And I asked you what you wanted before I left, and your exact words were,‘You, Rosso. I want you.’”

He sits in silence.
