People start showing up.Kayla is sitting near Garner, her arm around him. Daria is next to her brother, and Elliot, Daimen’s wife, is on the other side of him, flanked by Arden. Bodhi arrives with a platinum blonde on one arm, and the man I know as Jack Calypso on the other. He sits near Garner, and they begin to talk in hushed tones. A doctor I remember from the several times I’ve been immersed in this group comes out, and everyone gathers around him.

“Who is he again?” I ask Kayla, who has come over to lend her support.

“That’s my brother. He’s a doctor. He was on call when they brought Dom in.”

I remember now. “Jordan, right? He’s married to a man and a woman too. Scarlet and Levi?”

She nods her head. “Yeah, you’re right. His name is Jordan Peters.”

My breathing slows, waiting on Dom’s prognosis, when Daria runs from the group of people surrounding Kayla’s brother.

“You have some fucking nerve showing up here.” Soon more people disperse, and I witness a woman in ragged clothes and the man next to her, hauling an oxygen tank behind him, a mask over his face.

“Oh, shit,” Elliot whispers under her breath, closing the distance between us as Daimen, Arden, and Garner hurry toward Daria. “That’s Dom’s parents. Must have seen the news.”

I take a peek around Bodhi, who looks like he’s ready to lend a hand if needed. Mrs. Torano, Dom never told me her name, looks like she’s ninety and not in her sixties, which would be myguess. Mr. Torano begins to cough, and I fear a lung may come up if he doesn’t get some relief soon.

“We have the right to know what’s going on with our son.” This is Mrs. Torano.

“You have no rights to anything involving us or our families.” Daimen’s voice is authoritative, much like Dom’s. Still, when he speaks these words, goose bumps cover my arms. He’s downright scary. But it’s precisely how Dom spoke to Nate today. No one messes with their family.

“I’ll see my son, one way or another.”

I don’t realize I’ve wandered toward them until I’m standing in front of Dom’s mother. If I look hard, I can see a hint of a resemblance, but it’s overshadowed by her horrendous health.

“Why?” I ask, not mad or upset or raising my voice toward her.

“Who the hell are you?”

I crook my neck to the side, narrowing my eyes to hers. I can’t believe she can see clearly, not with the many sties on her eyelids. “I’m Dom’s partner in life. But what I find funny is if you have to see him so badly, why is this the first time in years you’ve made an effort? Without a shadow of a doubt, I can tell you he’d not want you within a mile, let alone an inch of him. So, I suggest that you heed your son’s advice and get the fuck out of here before I call security and have you forcefully removed.”

My calm has evaporated, and I want to claw her eyes out. Her husband has remained quiet this whole time. I wouldn’t put up with his bullshit if he opened his mouth at this point, either.

“You can’t do that?” It’s not a statement from the batshit crazy bitch, but more of a question.

“I can’t. But since I know that Daimen holds a power of attorney on Dom, for now, he can. And I’m pretty sure he will, so get the fuck out of here, and don’t get hit by a bus on your way home.”

Security is behind me, and with Daimen’s confirmation, they escort the Toranos out of the hospital.

My hands shake, but I turn around as the others gather near the doctor again.

Dr. Peters rakes his hands through his dark hair. “I don’t have a lot of news yet. He needed a blood transfusion. And he’s broken a couple bones, but that’s not the concern. It’s the internal bleeding somewhere near his heart.”

Heart? Internal bleeding. It’s the last thing I remember before I fall to the floor.

“Sandra? Sandra.”The voice is familiar. Not just familiar—I’d know it anywhere.

I open my eyes to my other half in this world, my legit other half, and her curly black hair is as wild as I remember it. “Fuck, the last thing I need is to enter a hospital with my twin sister being moved to a stretcher. You scared the fuck out of me.”

Attempting to piece together the last several hours, I fake a smile, but my brain isn’t working properly.

“Oh, good, you’re awake.” The male voice belongs to the doctor from earlier. “Cami, could you give me a second with your sister, please?”

My sister attempts to argue.

“Please, Cami. It will only be for a few minutes,” he insists.

She leans down and places a kiss on my forehead. “I’ll be back, got it?” On that, I have no doubt.
